After a surprisingly successful season in 2000, the 2001 Auburn Tigers football team posted a disappointing 7-5 record, finishing the season with a 5-3 record in the Southeastern Conference. The Tigers finished the season tied for first place in the SEC Western Division, but did not qualify for the conference championship game because of tie-breakers. The season was highlighted with a 23-20 victory over #1-ranked Florida on October 13.

Auburn's 24-17 victory over rival Georgia was highlighted by running back Carnell Williams carrying 41 times and catching several passes, one of which was a long screen pass to set up his own game-winning touchdown run.

The Tigers were scheduled to play LSU on September 15, but as a result of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the game was postponed until December 1. This marked the first time that Auburn has not ended its season against Iron Bowl archrival Alabama since that series was resumed in 1948.

While Auburn was unranked at the end of the season in the human polls, several BCS computer rating systems like [http://www.masseyratings.com/rate/cf-bcs.htm Massey] (#23), [http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt01.htm Sagarin] (#24) and the [http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/sports/collegefb/STpoll.html Seattle Times] (#24) had the team in their final top 25 rankings.
