I Only Want to Be with You

"I Only Want To Be With You" is a song by Mike Hawker and Ivor Raymonde. It was the first solo single released by British singer Dusty Springfield. Recorded while she was still a member of The Springfields, the song was released in November 1963, three weeks after The Springfields' final concert. It was a popular success, reaching #4 UK, #12 US, #6 Australia, and #21 Canada. In the US, it was one of the first pre-Beatles hits of the British Invasion of 1964.

The song has subsequently been covered on numerous occasions. Charting versions include:

Non-charting covers

*Chelsia Chan recorded the song in 1975 for her debut album "Dark Side Of Your Mind".
*Luis Miguel recorded a Spanish-language version of the song in 1987, called "Ahora te puedes marchar" (Now you can leave).
*Sir Elton John performed the song at a solo show at the Civic Center Arena, Illinois, the day of Dusty Springfield's death in 1999. He introduced the song saying "Dusty, wherever you are, this one's for you, my love, with all my love."
*Me First and the Gimme Gimmes did a cover of the song on their 2001 album "Blow in the Wind".
*Vonda Shepard covered the song for the Ally McBeal soundtrack (Songs from Ally McBeal, Sony 2002)
*Ash covered the song for a promotional tour CD titled Barbie 7'
*Volbeat covered the song on their 2005 album "The Strength / The Sound / The Songs".
*Tina Arena recorded the song in 2007 for her album "Songs of Love & Loss".
*Rasputina covered the song featuring guitarist Twiggy Ramirez.
*Tomoko Kawase covered the song (as Tommy february⁶) on her single L・O・V・E・L・Y ～夢見るLOVELY BOY～
*Rauli 'Badding' Somerjoki covered the song in Finnish under the title 'Jykevää on rakkaus', on his 1975 album 'Sydän lämpöä täys'. This was in turn later covered by the Finnish vocalist Ville Valo with group Agents.
*Taiwanese band 7 Flowers covered the song in their 2005 album.
*Shelby Lynne included the song in her tribute album to Dusty, Just a Little Lovin', released on January 29, 2008

Thames Television goodbye broadcast

The Tourists' version of the song reappeared on December 31, 1992-1 January, 1993 when Thames Television left broadcasting forever in the United Kingdom from ITV before Carlton Television began broadcasting. The retrospective program had that song with clips. There was no dialogue and sound, just the song. And in the ending of the broadcast, lines appeared and an announcer narrated the lines: "Thames: A Talent for Television...".

Other uses

* Was used in the opening for the TV series Arliss.
* A cover by Twiggy and Twiggy (possibly the one mentioned above) is on the soundtrack of Dead Man on Campus
* The song was used in the British soap opera EastEnders when the character Sam Mitchell dug up the body of Den Watts.
