Perhimpunan Pelestari Burung dan Habitatnya

Burung Indonesia (Indonesian for: "Birds of Indonesia"), official name: Perhimpunan Pelestari Burung dan Habitatnya or "Organisation for the Preservation of Birds and their Habitat", is the Indonesian society for the protection of birds. The organisation, which is a partner of the international organisation Birdlife International, was founded on July 15 2002 and has its head quarters in Bogor, Java. In 2006 the organisation had about 40 employees and over 1500 supporters, that are united in the Sahabat Burung Indonesia, the "Friends of Burung Indonesia".

Indonesia has an enormous biodiversity because the Wallace Line splits the archipelago in two. Because of this, there are both bird species of Asian origin and bird species of Australian origin that live here. Very many bird species are endemic to Indonesia, about 17% of all the bird species that exist in the world, live in this archipelago.

Often, birds like parrots are illegally caught from woods at a large scale, in order to sell them to people who want to keep them in cages, other bird species are captured for consumption. Many people even shoot at birds that fly around in urban areas, just for fun. Where birds are kept in cages, these are often very small cages and the birds live under bare circumstances. Burung Indonesia makes an effort to protect the well being and preservation of birds that live in Indonesia.
