Wears the Trousers Magazine

Wears the Trousers Magazine

"Wears The Trousers" is a UK-based music magazine, which focuses on the contribution of women in music industry and on music created or fronted by women. The magazine operates on a not-for-profit basis and is currently published only in an online format. Although comprising an unpaid/voluntary editorial team it has quickly gained a reputation for the quality of its writing and layout and for an even-handed approach to its journalistic content.

Early history

The magazine was founded in early 2005 by Alan Pedder, a music enthusiast working in the scientific/technical publishing industry, partly as a reaction to the biased and often seemingly misogynistic treatment of some women artists by music journalists [http://www.wearsthetrousers.com/about/ "Wears the Trousers" Magazine FAQ page, with references to the ethos of the magazine] . The first issue featured former Alisha's Attic, lead singer Shelly Poole as cover artist, along with features on Diane Cluck, Beth Hirsch, Pooka, Kamila Thompson and Rickie Lee Jones.

Unusually for an online magazine, as well as browsable HTML content "Wears the Trousers" also features a fully typeset and print-ready version of each edition in downloadable PDF format. Cover stars on subsequent issues have included; Rosie Thomas, The Pipettes and Thea Gilmore.

In January 2006, "Wears The Trousers" was chosen for permanent archiving as part of the British Library/ [http://www.webarchive.org.uk/ UK Web Archiving Consortium] digital preservation work, "The Women's Library" in recognition of its contribution to journalism relating to women and the arts.
