İsdemir

İsdemir is a Turkish steel producer located in İskenderun, Hatay Province at Mediterranean coast. The name is a contraction of the Turkish language "İskenderun Demir ve Çelik A.Ş.", which means "İskenderun Iron and Steel CO ". İsdemir is currently an Erdemir venture, another steel works located in Ereğli at the Black Sea coast.

İsdemir in brief

İsdemir was established on October 3, 1970 as Turkey's third state-owned steel works with Soviet technology. It began production in 1975 with a capacity of 1.1 million tons per year of crude steel. The plant capacity was extended from 1984 onwards to 2.2 million tons/year. There are three blast furnaces with a total annual capacity of 2.450 million tons pig iron. The ongoing investment plan in amount of US$ 2.0 billion targets the production of flat steel with a capacity of 3.5 million tons per year when it is completed at the end of 2008.

The steel works is located on an area of approximately 8.6 km² around 17 km north of İskenderun. Today, slightly more than 6,000 people are employed by the company. The plant owns a sea port, which can receive and handle 9 cargo ships of DWT|150,000|metric|first=yes at the same time.

The company, since 1998 in privatisation programme, was acquired by Erdemir on January 31, 2002 for US$50.0 million with the obligation to produce flat steel. Ataer Holding, a wholly owned subsidiary of the military pension fund OYAK, had purchased 49.29% of Erdemir’s shares on February 27, 2006 paying a total tender amount of US$2.96 billion in full in cash.
