Darabouka

Darabouka

The darabouka is a very common drum throughout the Middle East. Originally it was ceramic with a fish or goatskin head. Now most are made of aluminum with a plastic head. They are related to the Dumbek which is named directly from the sound it makes. "Dum" in the centre and "bek" on the rim. Traditionally they are played under one arm. Sounds are made by fingers in the centre and with rolls, flicks and slaps on the rim. They are an essential accompaniment to Belly dancing.
