List of spacewalks and moonwalks

List of spacewalks and moonwalks

This list contains all spacewalks and moonwalks where an astronaut has fully, or partially left his spacecraft. All spacewalks have had the astronauts tethered to their spacecraft except for seven spacewalks by the United States, (six in 1984 using the Manned Maneuvering Unit, one in 1994 testing the SAFER rescue device). All moonwalks saw astronauts untethered, and some had astronauts traveling far enough to lose visual contact with their craft (they were up to 7.6 km away from it using the Lunar Rover). As of October 26, 2007, 168 astronauts had made spacewalks (out of 464 astronauts who have gone into space).Cite web|url=http://www.cbsnews.com/network/news/space/democurrent.html|title=Current Space Demographics| accessdate = 2007-10-26|publisher=CBS News|year=2007|author=William Harwood] [cite web |last = Alexander|first = Anikeev|title = Manned astronautics: facts and figures|date = 2006-09-11

] Only 10 women have been on spacewalks, at least partly because the EVA suits are designed for a larger male frame.Cite web|url=http://www11.jsc.nasa.gov/history/walking/EVAChron.pdf|title=Walking to Olympus: An EVA Chronology| accessdate = 2007-10-04|publisher=National Aeronautics and Space Administration|year=2005|author=NASA|work=As of April 29, 1997] Cite web|url=http://www.astronautix.com/articles/womspace.htm|title=Women of Space | accessdate = 2007-10-04|publisher=Encyclopedia Astronautica|year=2007|author=Encyclopedia Astronautica]
