Elimination of fraternities at Williams College

Elimination of fraternities at Williams College

On June 30, 1962, the Williams College Committee on Review of Fraternity Questions (informally known as the Angevine Committee, after its chairman Jay B. Angevine II) submitted its report to the Board of Trustees, urging that the college assume responsibility for providing room and board to the entire student body. Up to that time, that role had been filled by the extensive system of fraternities at the college.

However, mounting concerns over the effect fraternities were having on the social life of the college had led to the formation of the Angevine Committee in the fall of 1961. The complete report can be found [http://www.kanecap.com/doc/williams/report_of_the_committee_on.pdf here] . A [http://wso.williams.edu/wiki/images/b/bd/New_York_Times_Article_on_the_Angevine_Report%2C_7-2-62.pdf New York Times article] from the days immediately following the report's publication summarized the recommendations.

A Standing Committee was appointed by the Board of Trustees in order to help implement the recommendations of the Angevine Committee. The Standing Committee solicited the help of several Williams alumni, including David Phillips 1958. A partial record of their correspondence is below:

At their meeting in October, 1962, the Board of Trustees drafted a [http://www.kanecap.com/doc/williams/the_board_of_trustees_sta.pdf statement] addressing the Angevine Report. This statement was published with the [http://www.kanecap.com/doc/williams/first_report_of_the_standi.pdf First Report of the Standing Committee] , which outlined their plan for implementing the transition away from the fraternity system. A [http://wso.williams.edu/wiki/images/a/a1/Reply_to_David_Phillips_from_Vince_Barnett%2C_10-19-62.pdf letter] to David Phillips from Vince Barnett, former Williams professor and Colgate University President, illustrates how significant this issue was to the Williams community at the time.

Reaction

Reaction to the Angevine Report and the Standing Committee's implementation of it varied considerably. Several Williams fraternities together published a counterargument titled " [http://www.kanecap.com/doc/williams/psi_upsilon_and_theta_delt.pdf A Report to the Williams College Family Containing Additional Information and Some Alternative Views on the Williams Fraternity System] ". The Sigma Phi Society published these [http://wso.williams.edu/wiki/images/1/11/Sigma_Phi_Society_of_Williams_College%27s_Resolutions%2C_11-27-62.pdf resolutions] in response to the report. Among the most vocal defenders of the fraternity system were the Williams Alumni Action Committee. Their three letters below span the period when the controversy was at its height:

* [http://www.kanecap.com/doc/williams/williams_alumni_action_com.pdf Letter from the Williams Alumni Action Committee] , 14 January1964

The tactics of the Williams Alumni Action Committee, in particular their urging of alumni opposed to the Angevine Report to withhold their contributions to the Alumni Fund, angered some members of the Williams community. Daniel K. Chapman, President of the Society of Alumni of Williams College, wrote this [http://wso.williams.edu/wiki/images/4/41/Letter_to_Alumni_from_Daniel_Chapman%2C_President_of_the_Society_of_Alumni_of_Williams_College%2C_12-15-62.pdf letter] in December, 1962. Following the second letter of Williams Alumni Action Committee, David Phillips wrote this [http://wso.williams.edu/wiki/images/c/cd/David_Phillips%27_Letter_to_the_Williams_Alumni_Action_Committee%2C_10-14-63.pdf response] .

Despite the protests of many alumni and students, the Board of Trustees reiterated their commitment to acting on the recommendations of the Angevine Committee in a [http://wso.williams.edu/wiki/images/6/6e/Letter_to_Alumni_from_the_Board_of_Trustees%2C_1-28-63.pdf letter] sent to alumni on January 28, 1963.cite journal
