The suffragran bishop was originally to assist the Archbishop of York in overseeing the Diocese of York, but after 1923 the position fell into abeyance. The title was revived in 1994 as a Provincial Episcopal Visitor for the whole Province of York and has responsibility for those parishes which, through conscience, feel unable to accept the ordination of women to the priesthood.
