Rate of striking

Rate of striking

In rowing, the rate of striking is the stroke rate, in strokes per minute, that the crew is racing at.

A rowing stroke consists of the following phases repeated until the race is complete:

# Catch - the oar is "square" (perpendicular to the water) and put into the water.
# Drive - the rower pulls the oar, using legs, back and arms, which propels the boat forward. Note, the rower is moving their body towards the bow of the boat during the drive.
# Release - the blade is removed from the water and "feathered", making the oar parallel with the water.
# Recovery - the rower brings the oar back to the catch to start the cycle again. During the recovery, the rower is moving their body towards the stern of the boat.
