Mongolia competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. No Mongolian athlete has won a gold medal, though the country can claim five silver and eight bronze medals.

Mongolia entered twenty competitors in the 2004 Games. 20 year old judoka Khashbaataryn Tsagaanbaatar won their only medal when he defeated Kenji Uematsu of Spain in the bronze medal contest of the 60 kg category on August 14.

Athletics

Luvsanlkhündegiin Otgonbayar finished more than an hour behind the winner, and more than thirty minutes behind the next-to-last runner in the women's marathon. In the men's marathon, Bat-Ochiryn Ser-Od finished just twenty minutes behind the winning time.

Mongolia sent one lightweight boxer to the 2004 Olympics. He won his first bout, but was defeated in the second.

Men's Lightweight (60kg):

Judo

Mongolia sent eight judokas to Athens, its largest contingent in any sport, and it was rewarded with its only medal of the Games. Khashbaataryn Tsagaanbaatar won his first three matches in less than five minutes, progressing to the semifinals, where he lasted less than thirty seconds against his Japanese opponent. In the bronze medal match, there were no scores in the five minute period, so another period was played, and Tsagaanbaatar scored with less than a minute-and-a-half remaining to win the bronze. Only one of the other seven judokas managed to progress as far as the quarterfinals, and the overall team record was 9-10.

Shooting

Otryadyn Gündegmaa was the only shooter representing Mongolia in Athens, and she managed to qualify for the final in the 25 metre pistol event. While she shot very solidly in the final, the leading shooters had established a large early lead, and Otryad finished well back of the medal spots.

Mongolia's only swimmer in Athens failed to advance from his opening round heat.

Bayarmaa finished last overall in her weight class, despite being the heaviest athlete in the class.

Wrestling
