Early Earth Federation mobile suits in the Gundam universe

Mobile suits (機動兵器) are fictional weapon systems from the Gundam anime metaseries. The following is a list of all early mobile suits from the Earth Federation.

MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam

The MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam is about a fictional weapon from the Universal Century time line of the anime Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ metaseries.

MSZ-009 Prototype ΖΖ Gundam

The iyot of the ΖΖ Gundam was tested in two MSZ-009 Prototype ΖΖ Gundam which can separated into two parts called "G-Top Zero Type" and "G-Base Zero Type". (and could transform into "G-Fortress Zero Type" in SD Gundam Games) . The Prototype ΖΖ Gundam's main purpose was to test combining mechanisms, which developed into a new core block system.

MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam

The MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam (Double Zeta Gundam, "codename: "θ Gundam" (Theta Gundam)") is the tenth mobile suit built by Anaheim Electronics as the culmination of the Project Ζ.

The completed ΖΖ Gundam was held in La Vie en Rose, and was soon transferred to the Argama. The ΖΖ has a bio-sensor, as found in the Zeta Gundam. The ΖΖ is a transformable mobile suit, capable of becoming the mobile armor "G-Fortress". The G-Fortress can separate into two flight-capable components, called the Core Top and Core Base. The Core Base is operated by the ΖΖ's Neo Core Fighter. Unlike the Ζ Gundam in "Waverider" mode, G-Fortress couldn't use it for re-entry.

The ΖΖ features a large array of powerful beam weaponry. This includes two hyper beam sabers which are also usable as beam cannons, a two-barreled double beam rifle, a 21-tube missile launcher installed on the backpack, and a high mega cannon on the forehead. While the ΖΖ Gundam has very destructive arsenal, the weapon system requires a high level of energy, and the ΖΖ Gundam often found itself almost completely drained of power after using the high mega cannon. In addition, its complicated construction and transformation systems made it somewhat structurally weak.

14 year old Judau Ashta became the designated pilot of the ΖΖ Gundam in the year UC 0088 and joins the war between the AEUG and Axis (Neo-Zeon) .

MSZ-010S (MSZ-010B) Enhanced ΖΖ Gundam

Near the end of war, the ΖΖ Gundam was modified into the MSZ-010S Enhanced ΖΖ Gundam. It featured a larger backpack with four more powerful rocket thrusters, and additional vernier thrusters. While the original had 21-tube missile launchers on the backpack, limited to one missile per launch tube, the Enhanced version replaced them with a pair of 18-tube missile launchers, with each tube carrying a two-missile magazine for additional salvos. Anaheim Electronics further upgraded the MSZ-010S Enhanced ΖΖ Gundam with additional external armor, tested in the FA-010A FAZZ, and weapons into the FA-010S Full Armor ΖΖ Gundam which corrected its structure problem. This heavy armor contained missile launchers, as well as a powerful hyper mega cannon on the torso armor component. The armor was protected by anti-beam coating, which could withstand some weak beams. The drawback of Full Armor components was that they were fixed the Enhanced ΖΖ in mobile suit mode only, and thus the Full Armor ΖΖ could not transform into G-Fortress mode.

FA-010A (FA-010B) FAZZ

The FA-010A (FA-010B) FAZZ is a prototype mobile suit from the Gundam photo-novel series Gundam Sentinel.The FAZZ was a testbed unit designed by Anaheim Electronics to test out several of the features that would be put into use when they would construct the FA-010S Full Armor ΖΖ Gundam. The acronym FAZZ (pronounced as "fahts") stands for "Full Armor ΖΖ. The FAZZ tested the concept of adding extra armor components to critical structural points to make the unit more structurally sound. However, the FAZZ itself had the necessary equipment to transform into the G fortress removed to simplify construction costs, and the armor components of the FAZZ can not be removed or ejected, so the unit is incapable of transforming and combining into G-Fortress mode like the standard MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam was capable of doing.

Also, the FAZZ's high mega cannons (mounted in the unit's forehead and the front of the torso) were totally inoperable. The structures for where the dummy weapons are located were only there for aesthetic purposes, and to serve as a placeholder for when they would be functionally incorporated into the Full Armor ΖΖ Gundam. Likewise, the back mounted beam cannons were derived from the S Gundam and while resembling the Hyper Beam Sabers equipped by the ΖΖ, they were incapable of being used in a similar fashion. Still, the FAZZ was a monstrously powerful unit. It carried a double beam rifle attached to its right arm, and an incredibly powerful large hyper mega cannon over its shoulder, attached to a swivel on the right side of the backpack. The FAZZ also incorporated several missile pods into its integrated armor components, with various assortments of missiles in both of its shoulders, left fore-arm, both sides of the chest, and the projection on top of the backpack. For close combat it also featured 60 mm vulcan guns in the head.

A total of three FAZZ units would be created, and all three of them would be assigned to Taskforce Alpha for use in a heavy fire support role. Their immense firepower gave them a huge advantage against the New Desides forces, as the large hyper mega cannon was more powerful than the beam cannons on the "Pegasus III" assault carrier. The hyper mega cannon could be fired continuously at full power for a total of three seconds, but it suffered from a long recharge period afterwards, so the three FAZZ units would take turns alternating fire to keep a constant barrage and provide support for one another.

All three FAZZ units would be destroyed at Aires City, on the lunar surface, by New Desides' leader Brave Cod in his ORX-013 Gundam Mk-V when he engaged them at melee range where the FAZZ had no defenses...

MSZ-013 Mass Production Type ΖΖ Gundam

Anaheim Electronics also planned to mass produce ΖΖ Gundam as MSZ-013 Mass Production Type ΖΖ Gundam. It would use the original body, but redesigned to remove the Core Block System and the transformation function. The high mega cannon also has lower power output compared to original unit. Four prototype units were built. While the design is incredibly powerful when compared with other mass production MS, it suffered the same power generator problem and mass production never happened.

FA-78-1 Gundam Full Armor Type

The FA-78-1 Gundam Full Armor Type never appeared in any actual animated form, but it is an official Mobile Suit Variation.

As the RX-78-2 Gundam continued to score victory after victory against the Zeon forces in the One Year War, the Earth Federation Forces engineers began to devise several different upgrades to supplement and further increase the combat capabilities of the Gundam. The upgrade program, called the Full-Armor System and Weapon System (FSWS), developed several options packs to increase the Gundam's already considerable power. One of these designs was the Gundam Full Armor Type, which vastly increased the Gundam's firepower and armor.

New weaponry consists of a large rocket-firing cannon mounted over the Full Armor Gundam's right shoulder, four missile launchers, two mounted in the upper torso and two more in the knees, and a new twin-barreled beam gun secured to the right arm. The Gundam Full Armor Type also had several removable armor modules that could be placed over the Gundam's existing armor. These new armor modules also incorporated several additional thrusters and maneuvering verniers.

However, due to the Full Armor Gundam's massive increase in weight, it suffered a sharp drop in mobility which the new thrusters could not sufficiently compensate for. It was deemed that the loss in speed and maneuverability would be unacceptable and the Gundam Full Armor Type never left the development stages. The Gundam Full Armor Type would never be built, and only existed on paper. However the plans for the unit would later be used as the basis of creating the FA-78-2 Heavy Gundam. However, this is contradicted in the game Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters In Space, as the Gundam Full Armor Type is piloted at A Boa Qu by Lieutenant Heinz Baer, and is destroyed after a heated battle against Shin Matsunaga's MS-14Jg Gelgoog Jager.

FA-78-2 Heavy Gundam

The FA-78-2 Heavy Gundam, like the FA-78-1 Gundam Full Armor Type, never appeared in any actual animated form, but it is an official MS-X mobile suit variation.

Although the FA-78-1 Gundam Full Armor Type was deemed to be a design failure while it was still in the planning phases, the Earth Federation continued to design new upgrades to for the RX-78-2 Gundam under Full-Armor System and Weapon System (FSWS) program. The most successful concept to come out of the project was the design of the Heavy Gundam. Instead of adding supplemental external armor and weapons modules to a pre-existing mobile suit as the Gundam Full Armor Type did, the Heavy Gundam was an entirely new mobile suit built from the ground up. This reduced some of the weight issues the original design suffered, and allowed for the unit to have thicker and sturdier armor as well.

The Heavy Gundam also borrowed the shoulder-mounted rocket cannon from the Gundam Full Armor Type, but also added in a beam saber over the opposite shoulder for use in close combat situations. The concept of rocket launchers in the shoulders and knees was removed all together, and the Heavy Gundam was instead given a special gun that mounted over the right fore-arm called a "heavy launcher." The Heavy Gundam's heavy launcher incorporated both a large Gatling gun and a four-tube missile launcher, making it a useful long-range weapon.

Only one prototype Heavy Gundam would be built, as development of new Gundam upgrades was ended in November of Universal Century 0079. But the Heavy Gundam's design was still successful as it had overcome all of the weight and mobility problems that had plagued the Gundam Full Armor Type. The lone Heavy Gundam prototype would see action at least once, piloted by Colonel Den Berserk when the Earth Federation Forces captured the Zeon asteroid fortress of Pezun.

MSA-007 Nero

The MSA-007 Nero is a mobile suit from the novel series Gundam Sentinel. According to the design note, it is a mass production version of MSA-0011 S-Gundam

The design of Nero was inspired by another of Anaheim Electronics's mass production mobile suit, the MSA-003 Nemo.

RGM-79 GM

This article is about a mobile suit, a weapon of the Gundam anime metaseries.

The GM (pronounced "Jim"), acronym of "Gundam Mass-production" is the mass produced version of the RX-78-2 Gundam. Though many variants were produced over the years, the RGM-79 GM was the Federation's first true mass-produced mobile suit. After the conclusion of the One Year War, the GM and its variants became the staple of the Earth Federation military forces.

The production model of the GM removed many of the RX-78's more expensive and complicated systems, such as the Core Block system and the learning computer. The RX-78's lunar titanium armor was replaced with cheaper standard titanium, and the Minovsky fusion powerplant was downrated. As a consequence, the GM was armed with a short range beam spray gun instead of the Gundam's more powerful beam rifle. Other standard armament for the GM included a 100mm machinegun or 380mm bazooka, a single beam saber and two head-mounted 60 mm vulcans machineguns.

The MS was very mobile, with a maximum thruster acceleration of nearly 1G and a maximum running ground speed of over 60 miles per hour (102 km/h). While its titanium monocoque construction provided slightly superior protection compared to the Zeon standard high tensile steel, it was not enough to provide substantial protection against the beam weaponry which had become standard by the time of its introduction.

The GM's introduction in November of UC 0079 would turn the tide of war against Zeon. While not materially superior to the Zeon's standard MS-06F Zaku II, and inferior to high performance units such as the MS-09 Dom or MS-14 Gelgoog, the GM benefited from the Earth Federation's superior production capacity. Zeon's focus on developing experimental units stalled support of their frontline forces even as the Federation began its counterattack. In the end, the Dom would not be deployed until late November, and the Gelgoog would not see its first deployment until the last two weeks of the One Year War. The Battle of A Baoa Qu of December 31 UC 0079 through January 1 UC 0080 laid bare Zeon's strategic error, as masses of well trained EF pilots in GMs overwhelmed the dwindling supply of Zeon aces flying untested mobile suits.

During the One Year War a recorded 42+288 GMs (42 early types and 288 late types) and each variant with no more than 50 were produced, claimed in Gundam Officials and MG model manual. These numbers dated back to early semi-canon guide book Gundam Century. Although most people doubted that these production numbers are accurate (which adds up to only a little less than 1000 GM produced during the OYW) since the top 8 Zeon Ace pilots shot down a total of 1222 MS by the books "MS Variation" and "History of One Year War(一年戦争史)", same sources also included that Zeon forces, unlike EFF, do not count their shoot down very accurately. With a team of 3 people shooting down one enemy MS, it is always claimed as shooting down one MS per pilot instead of 1/3 per pilot. Also, shot down pictures were seldom closely inspected and thus making a lot of "shot downs" number actually just bluff. Another proposed theory is that the EFF did not have MS in the beginning of the war and Zeon forces counted all types of Mobile weapons as shot downs, and these include the mass numbered tanks and fighters/space fighters (with over 30000 left even after the war), which is definitely enough to fill up the numbers.

After the One Year War, the RGM-79 design became the backbone of the Earth Federation Forces. Many variants were produced throughout the 0080s, and the basic frame was not replaced until the appearance of the RGM-89 Jegan in 0089.

Real Life

In real life, the GM was designed by Kunio Okawara for the original Mobile Suit Gundam television series. Of the concepts introduced into Gundam, the GM, as a grunt-level mech used by the protagonists of the series, is one which has become a staple of the mecha anime genre, the logical next step from one super-powered machine against a vast evil force to a full-scale conflict between two armies with the robotic equivalent of foot soldiers. The GM served as a direct inspiration for machines within other Gundam shows, most notably the Strike Dagger from Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED DESTINY. In addition, the concept of mass-produced machines on the side of the series' protagonists is seen in other mecha anime, such as the "Dragoon" from Metal Armor Dragonar, and all the machines used by the United Nations Space Navy in The Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.

Retcon redesigns were featured in the OVAs and , although these redesigns have since been designated as separate models. The GM is also a popular subject for various Mobile Suit Variations.

There are two accepted versions of the RGM-79; the original design by Kunio Okawara (which featured a single-piece waist armor, no neck, a smooth, rounded face and ill-defined elbow joints and legs) and a popular redesign by Hajime Katoki which brings the GM more in line with its predecessor the RX-78. These two designs are functionally the same machine; generally the Okawara design is used to represent a more "nostalgic" GM while the Katoki design displays a more "realistic" approach.

Variants

RGM-79C GM Kai

The RGM-79C "Kai" (改, "modified") is an upgrade of the standard RGM-79 developed after the conclusion of the One Year War. While similar in many respects to the wartime model, the GM Kai featured upgraded maneuvering thrusters that provided a modest upgrade in performance. This refinement of the GM design would serve as the basis for numerous variants, and was the mainstay of the Federal forces until the rollout of the new GM II units in 0085.(Source: )

RGM-79P Powered GM /RGM-79CR GM Kai High Mobility Type

RGM-79CR is a loose designation encompassing several prototype GM units during the mid-0080s. These models were designed as testbeds for new technology and were generally not fit for field duty. The RGM-79P Powered GM was used by the Gundam Project to test the new GP series of prototype Gundam units. Its was outfitted with heavy upgrades to its powerplant, thrusters and shock absorbers located on bulky external backpacks. The only known Powered GM was assigned to the Torrington Base in Australia.

The RGM-79CR High Mobility Type was assigned to the Titans Test Team to test the viability of the new RGM-79R GM II. Painted in Titans blue, it featured numerous functional adaptations that rendered it the equivalent of the GM II in performance.

RGM-79D GM Cold Climate Type

A variant of the original RGM-79, built near the end of the One Year War. Designed to counteract Zeon's MS-09 Dom, the Cold Climate Type featured improved maneuverability over the standard GM. Special insulation allowed the RGM-79D to operate in numerous harsh climates, including the Arctic, without the need for constant maintenance. Although it was considered a success, the Cold Climate Type's specialized role and limited production run resulted in relatively few units being produced. These would see very little combat in its standard form, as the Zeon would never produce a dedicated ms for use in cold climates. However, these units would see combat in late 0079, when the Cyclops team attacked the Antarctic research base and in the Federation's attack on Baikonur Spaceport.

RGM-79 [E] GM Type E

The GM Type E was the earliest model of GM, developed soon after the combat data from the V Project reached Luna II via White Base. The Type E was designed for space combat in coordination with the RGM-79 [G] Ground Type GM. Data from these two pre-production models would serve as the basis for the later RGM-79 mass production model. Very few of these units reached combat, and those that did were generally seen as a disappointment thanks to their weak armor and maneuverability.

RGM-79F Land Combat Type GM

A GM variant developed for ground combat during the One Year War. The upper half of the GM's armor was strengthened to protect against Zaku machinegun fire. The Land Combat GM also carried a railcannon in addition to standard GM's armaments. The Land Combat Type GM was mainly deployed on the European battle lines.

RGM-79G GM Command

With the One Year War drawing to a close, the Earth Federation built the RGM-79G GM Command as an improved version of the standard RGM-79 GM. The GM Command featured a slightly modified body type that allowed for extra thrusters, improving maneuverability. The GM Command was generally assigned to ace units, although its late introduction to the war prevented many of these units from seeing combat. A notable exception was the conflict at the top-secret Federation research facility in Side 6's Libot colony, where GM Command units from the carrier Gray Phantom sortied with Zeon skirmish units inside the colony.

Two slight variants of the GM Command were produced; one suited for ground combat and another with several extra maneuvering verniers designed for zero-g encounters. This GM Command Space Type is sometimes distinguished by the designation RGM-79GS, although they are functionally similar units.

RGM-79 [G] GM Ground Type

The RGM-79 [G] GM Ground Type was the second pre-production GM model designed by the Earth Federation to test the eventual mass production RGM-79. A counterpart to the RGM-79 [E] , the Ground Type featured enhanced armor plating, a unique shield design and an enhanced weapon loadout. While it lacked the traditional head-mounted Vulcan cannons of its predecessors, the Ground Type was capable of wielding a 6-tube missile launcher and even a cap-based beam rifle. The Ground Type also shared about 80% of its parts with the RX-79 [G] Ground Type Gundam, allowing easy repair between the two models. Although usually RX-79 [G] Ground Type Gundams were repaired using parts from Ground type GMs, there were a few instances of Ground type GMs using parts from the Ground type Gundams, such as Matt Healy's Platoon, who at one point replaced the standard Ground GM backpack with the Ground type Gundam's backpack in order to allow it to use the parachute pack in a drop operation.

Overall, 42 units were produced. Twelve were used by Kojima Battalion stationed in Southeast Asia. The other 30 were used in the Federation's first successful offensive counterstrike against the Zeon Forces in Operation Odessa. The Ground Type was discontinued in November 0079 when its cheaper, mass-production successor, the RGM-79, was introduced.

RGM-79 [G] GM Sniper Ground Type

A variant of the RGM-79 [G] GM Ground Type, designed for long-range precision firepower. Painted a drab olive green for camouflage, its hand armament consisted of a single long-range beam rifle with a high-power scope. However the rifle needed a large amount of energy, so it was connected to an external power generator and a cooling device. At least four GM Snipers were used by the Kojima Battalion.

RGM-79L GM Light Armor

A Mobile Suit Variation of the RGM-79, the GM Light Armor was designed for fast hit-and-run strikes. The Light Armor had just that: the barest minimum of armor. The shoulder and ankle armors were removed completely, and the hip armor plating is noticeably smaller. This decrease in mass allowed for better acceleration and maneuverability. The GM Light Armor also used a beam gun that was more closely related to the RX-78-2 Gundam's beam rifle. This beam gun packed a heavier punch and longer range but had limited ammunition. The RGM-79L GM Light Armor was an overall success and was popular with many fighter-pilots-turned-MS-pilots. The most famous was Captain Gary Rogers.

RGM-79N GM Custom

The RGM-79N GM Custom was the limited production model of the RX-78NT1 Alex. The Custom removed the Alex's panoramic cockpit and arm-mounted gatling cannons in favor of greater power and maneuverability. The GM Custom was a substantial improvement to the GM line, and was comparable in power to the RX-78 Gundam. It even held its own against experimental Gundam units of its day, such as the GP-01. Because of its high cost, the GM Custom was limited to ace pilots. In the third Zeta Gundam complication movies, an RGM-79N unit is seen being in use (along with an RGC-83 GM Cannon II) by the AEUG, repainted similarly to the GM II.

RGM-79Q GM Quel

Following the brutal fighting of the Delaz Incident of 0083, the Earth Federation decided to form a special task force to suppress possible rebellions in space colonies. This new semi-autonomous force was known as the Titans. The RGM-79Q GM Quel, a refinement of the RGM-79N GM Custom, was chosen as their first mainstay mobile suit. It featured improved performance over the Custom, and its recognizable blue color scheme served to intimidate enemies of the Titans. However it was designed to fight inside colonies, not in the void of space. it was only assigned to Titans, and became their main stay mobile suits until the release of Hi-Zack and Marasai.

RGM-79Q Hazel Reserve Unit

Utilized by the Titan Test Team, this RGM-79Q GM Quel is a reserve machine so that its parts could be exchanged with those of the RX-121 Gundam TR-1 [Hazel] . In essence, this is nothing more than a "Gundam Head", as its Gundam type-head is modified from standard GM-Quel heads; the rest of its body remains identical to that of the standard GM Quel.

RX-121 Gundam TR-1 Hazel

The RX-121 Gundam TR-1 [Hazel] is a functional test machine assigned to the Murphy team, based upon the GM Quel. It was equipped with a Gundam head in order to test its psychological effectiveness against Zeon remnants, though it was actually modified from existing GM-Quel head instead of a true RX-type Gundam head. As it is developed for use in real combat, as well as used as test machine, many of its parts have been replaced with enhancement parts like the new backpack, the movable booster pod attached to it, and the improved thrusters in its legs. As a result, its potential rivals that of an RX type.

Its beam rifle is a prototype version of the energy pack type which the next generation of machines are expected to carry, and this machine has also been used in the development and testing of other devices such as the shield booster. Also, the support actuator units on the Hazel's shoulders can be fitted with either multipurpose launchers, or holding grips to help stabilize its arms while in High Mobility Form. Its skirt armor is usually fitted with energy pack holders which store two energy packs apiece.

The Hazel's most distinctive equipment is the shield booster, which contains propellant tanks and a single thruster with an output of 22,000 kg. This device is a further evolution of the sturm boosters used by earlier mobile suits, but unlike its ancestors the shield booster is retained as a shield after its propellant supply is exhausted, rather than being discarded when empty. The Hazel's Assault Form is equipped with two shield boosters, one on each arm, and its High Mobility Form also carries one on its movable booster pod.

Although the original Hazel's specs are unknown, it spec is probably weaker than Hazel Custom, making its overall specs are probably very similar to those of the RX-78GP01 Gundam "Zephyranthes".

RGM-79R GM II

Introduced in UC 0085, the RGM-79R GM II was an updated version of the Earth Federation's original RGM-79 GM mobile suit. While a clear improvement over the original design, the GM II was soon outclassed by the high-performance transformable mobile suits introduced in the Gryps Conflict. However, it remained one of the most heavily mass produced mobile suit in its day, second only to the Hizack.

RGM-79SC GM Sniper Custom

The GM Sniper Custom was a high-performance mobile suit built specifically for highly skilled MS pilots during the One Year War. It featured a higher-output reactor, extra thrusters in the legs, and an improved booster backpack. Due to the extra heat the equipment generated the RGM-79SC was also fitted with vents and coolings system to the waists and legs. Lastly, a "face guard" shield was added to the head to provide additional protection to the GM Sniper Custom's head sensors without hindering the machine's ability to detect and acquire targets. Its primary weapon was a long-range beam rifle designed for sniper mission. An optional beam saber could also be fixed on the forearm for potential close combat situations.

The GM Sniper Custom proved to be remarkably expensive and only a total of 50 units were fielded during the war.

RGM-79SP GM Sniper II

Based on the RGM-79G GM Command, the GM Sniper II was the most powerful GM variant built during the One Year War. Featuring special targeting sensors in a "face guard" visor for its standard sensors, the GM Sniper II could be equipped with a beam rifle or 90 mm machine gun for close-quarters combat, or a long-range, projectile-firing rifle for sniper missions. Only a very few Sniper IIs were produced in the last days of the One Year War.

Three units were assigned to the Pegasus Class Assault Carrier Gray Phantom's scarlet team and fielded in defence of the federation R&D base in Side 6. All three units were destroyed with the rest of the scarlet team by Mikhail Kaminsky and his Kampfer.

GM Sniper II models became the primary suits of the Earth Federal Army's 'White Dingo' MS Team in Australia in the last month of the One Year War. The White Dingo team first operated RGM-79SP units at Hughendon HLV base in Australia in the last battle of repelling Zeon occupation of the continent.

Confusingly, the model number RGM-79SP is also assigned to the RGM-79SP Desert GM.

RGM-79SP Desert GM

Following a similar philosophy to the RGM-79D Cold Climate Type GM, a variant of the GM was developed for desert combat, designated the RGM-79SP Desert GM. Unlike the 79D, the 79SP was based on the RGM-79F Land Combat GM. It is equipped with reactive armor, as well as special joints to deal with the intake of sand. The Desert GM is armed with a beam spray gun, a beam saber and a railcannon with a combination missile pod. The Desert GM was deployed mainly in Near and Middle East and Northern Africa.

RAG-79 Aqua GM

As its name implies, the Aqua GM was an aquatic mobile suit based on the RGM-79 GM. It was developed to oppose the Principality of Zeon's successful amphibious mobile suit line, such as the Z'gok. The project suffered from underfunding and a rushed development cycle, and the Aqua GM had severe problems remaining airtight and pressure resistant. The project was soon terminated with only a small number of Aqua GM produced, as the theatre of war moved offworld and the need for amphibious units became moot.

A handful of Aqua GMs were redesigned for ace pilots. These modified units resembled the RX-78-2 Gundam and were called the Waterproof Gundam or Gundiver. Armed with an explosive harpoon gun and an underwater type beam rifle, they featured improved combat ability over the standard RAG-79. However, information regarding its overall effectiveness during the war remains unknown.

TGM-79 (RGM-79T) GM Trainer

Even as the Earth Federation began mass production of the RGM-79, they found themselves with a critical lack of trained mobile suit pilots. To remedy this, several RGM-79s were converted into dual-seater units and designated as TGM-79 GM Trainers. The trainee pilot sat in a standard cockpit with the instructor pilot in another seat above him. The instructor's cockpit was equipped with a small window. While for all intents and purposes a standard GM, the GM Trainer was stripped of most of its armor and equipped with training weapons that rendered it unsuitable for combat. When not used for training, TGM-79s were often conscripted for engineering and construction duties.

One rare variant on the standard TGM-79 was the TGM-79C GM Canal. Deployed in UC 0085 at the Federation "École" training facility in North America, the TGM-79 was in fact one of the more advanced mobile suits of the day. Two variants of the TGM-79C exist - a single seater for basic training and a two-seater for advanced training with an instructor riding onboard. The single seater replaced the relatively fragile head with a more durable sensor block that contained all the standard sensors, while the two-seater used a modified head that contained two cameras. The standard three-screen cockpit that was in use then was replaced with a panaramic cockpit and linear chair, however, the screen could be configured to "low-visibility mode" which would emulate the standard three-screen display. In addition (and unbeknownst to the trainee pilots), all TGM-79C units were equipped with special gear designed for detecting and assessing latent Newtype capabilities in the trainees.

Newtype Test GM Juggler

During the late stages of the One Year War (October-December UC 0079), the Earth Federation was confounded on how to defend themselves against the new psycommu mobile armors/suits developed by Zeon. They decided to develop a unit designed to imitate all-range multi-vector attacks using existing technology (not the psycommu system). This was called the "'Newtype GM Test Juggler". It used a heavily modified RGM-79 GM as the base machine, and two RB-79 Ball pods equipped with two beam cannons as the attack units. It is a two seater, and uses laser communication to conduct a shoddy version of the all-range attack. However, due to problems considering balance and effects, the project is cancelled after the war ends.

RGM-79FP GM Striker

During the late stages of the One Year War (October-December UC 0079), the Earth Federation developed a special close-combat version of the GM for Federation ground ace pilots. This model was called the RGM-79FP GM Striker. It lacked the head mounted vulcan guns, retained the beam saber, was capable of using a special shield and 90mm machine gun, but its coup de grace weapon was a twin-bladed beam lance that retained the close combat effectiveness of a beam javelin. Also upgraded was the thrust: eight large rocket nozzles were located on the backpack and rear leg armor, giving it enhanced ground mobility. This mobile suit was extremely maneuverable and deadly in the hands of an experienced pilot. The GM Striker appears in the new PlayStation 3 video game .

RGC-80 GM Cannon

Based upon the prototype RGC-80-1 GM Cannon Test Type artillery-use mobile suit designed by the Earth Federation Forces, the RGC-80 GM Cannon was a completely reworked and refined version that corrected the errors of the Test Type, including its terrible recoil and balance issues that prevent the Test Type from being mass produced. And although it was never actually seen in any Mobile Suit Gundam animated series the GM Cannon is an official Mobile Suit Variation.

To solve the recoil issues, the GM Cannon mounted only a single 240 mm recoilless cannon as opposed to the twin cannons of its predecessor. Heavier armor was created for the GM Cannon and fitted onto the skirt armor and legs to further solve balance, recoil, and weight problems.

Initially only six RGC-80 GM Cannons would be produced and fielded. These six GM Cannons would serve as a part of the Earth Federation's campaign to retake the North American continent. By the time the Earth Federation had recaptured California Base from the Principality of Zeon forces on North America's Pacific Coast, the GM Cannons had proven themselves on the field of combat and the unit was approved for mass-production. Forty-four additional GM Cannons would be constructed and distributed to various Earth Federation battalions around the Earth to assist in driving the Zeon Military Force back out into space. Some units would be sent to Africa, and others were used by famous teams such as the White Dingos.

The RGC-80 GM Cannon would continue to see active service even after the One Year War and into the Gryps Conflict in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series in Universal Century 0087.

RGC-80-1 GM Cannon Test Type

The RGC-80-1 GM Cannon Test Type is an experimental Earth Federation Forces artillery mobile suit. Although it was never actually seen in any animated series the GM Cannon Test Type is an official Mobile Suit Variation.

When the Earth Federation Forces finally began mass-producing their own RGM-79 GM model of mobile suits in the final months of the One Year War it was decided that there would need to be a mid-range fire support unit to properly supplement their close-range GM forces. Rather than wasting the time designing a new mobile suit, and then putting a strain on resources setting up the new production lines that would be necessary to build them, the Federation Forces decided to simply produce a design variant of the standard GM to fill the void in their ranks.

The first GM redesign created in the attempt to solve the Federation's problem was the RGC-80-1 GM Cannon Test Type. The GM Cannon Test Type was little more than a normal GM with a RX-77-2 Guncannon's head, backpack, and dual 240 mm shoulder-mounted cannons. However there was a critical flaw in this first design. The dual shoulder cannons were far too heavy for the light frame of the GM, and when the cannons were fired the unit experienced severe recoil and balance problems. The GM Canon Test Type was deemed insufficient, and the Federation's researchers and engineers went back to rework the design, producing the RGC-80 GM Cannon as their final product.

RGC-83 GM Cannon II

The RGC-83 GM Cannon II is a mobile suit from the anime OVA .

The RGC-83 GM Cannon II is a heavy-duty support type mobile suit designed to provide covering fire for its teammates. While it is the second version of the UC 0079 RGC-80 GM Cannon, it more closely resembles the RX-77-2 Guncannon mobile suit made famous by fighting alongside the original RX-78-2 Gundam.

The GM Cannon II is also heavier armed than its predecessors. It is equipped with two shoulder-mounted beam cannons, un-like the Guncannon, and can carry a 90 mm machine gun as well as a beam saber for close combat. It also includes two 60 mm vulcan guns mounted in the head, but these are usually strictly last-resort weapons. To power this strong weapons the GM Cannon II has a stronger reactor. It is also very heavily armored, featuring Chobham armor based of the same design as the RX-78NT1 Gundam 'Alex'. However, it pays the price for this durability for this with very low speed and mobility. A GM Cannon II on its own has been shown to not be able to fend for itself due to opponents being able to outmaneuver it, unless its opponent also lacks speed.

Although it isn't known how many GM Cannon II models were produced it is known that two units were stationed on the "Albion" and used during Operation Stardust in UC 0083.

The GM Cannon II was later deployed by the AEUG during the gryps conflict. Their units were painted forest green on gray with an orange visor.

Hi-Zack

Based on the MS-06 Zaku II line of mobile suits, the Hi-Zack was a mass production suit used by the Titans and Earth Federation in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, The first Neo Zeon movement and other forces in Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam, and a unit even appearing with the 2nd Neo Zeon forces in .

RMS-106 Hi-Zack

The mass produced Mobile Suit of the Titan Forces, as well as the Earth Federation, the Hi-Zack was a vast improvement over the Zaku II, used by the Principality of Zeon. Although the Titan Forces were assigned to wipe out the remaining bits of the Zeon forces, the Titan Hi-Zack uses the same dark green color scheme (The Earth Forces had used a dark blue color for theirs). The Hi-Zack is most often equipped with an, out of date, Zaku 120mm machine gun and a beam saber. Hi-Zacks are also sometimes equipped with a beam rifle and heat hawk, but its fairly low tolerance for beam weapons means it can only carry one beam weapon at a time, and on the waist, Hi-Zacks may also be equipped with missile pods instead of hand thrown grenades of previous Mobile Suits. The Hi-Zack also has been outfitted with titanium ceramic composite armor, and it has a lighter generator than that of a Zaku. The Hi-Zack also has a shield mount on its right forearm. Hi-Zacks are much faster and more agile than its predecessors, and is generally given to trainees. This model would be seen through out Zeta and ZZ as the cannon fodder units generally in its Titan green hues than the Federation blue hues.

RMS-106CS Hi-Zack Custom

An experimental improved version of the RMS-106 Hi-Zack, the RMS-106CS Hi-zack Custom was designed to operate as a special operations and sniper unit. Sporting a higher-output generator to power its long-range sniper-style beam launcher, the Hi-Zack Custom also mounted a larger shoulder shield to improve its defensive posture. It also carried a heavier backpack with larger rocket thrusters, giving the Hi-Zack Custom a much higher speed and agility over the standard model. Only a limited number of these modified Hi-zacks would be built and fielded during the Gryps War of UC 0087, despite the fact that it proved highly effective as a sniper unit and earned the nickname "Hiding Hi-Zack." This unit only makes an appearance in Z Gundam where two units are fielded in a plot to destroy the AEUG forces.

RMS-108 Marasai

Designed by Anaheim Electronics for the AEUG, the Marasai was designed to be an all-round better version of the RMS-106 Hi-Zack. Anaheim then presented the Titans with the design when they started to turn their attention towards their support of the AEUG.

The Marasai's standard weapons were a beam rifle, a beam saber, and two vulcan guns mounted on the sides of the unit's head. A large shield was attached to the right shoulder, much like the Zaku line of mobile suits. The Marasai was also the first Mobile Suit to be able to shoot three beams in rapid succession. While the Marasai was a vast improvement over the Hi-Zack, it was only made in small numbers and never replaced it. The beam rifle would be seen through the Zeta series used by various other Zaku-like MS. The Marasai would be first seen during the Jaburo Drop episodes and will be used later as an additional cannon fodder unit even being used by Axis in a green color scheme.

RMS-116H Hobby Hi-Zack

With the introduction of newer and more advanced mobile suit designs being used by frontline troops of the Earth Federation Forces, some older models were refurbished for civilian use and sold as surplus items on the open market. One such model was the RMS-106 Hizack, which was stripped of its armaments and weapon capabilities, had its armor slightly modified, and redesignated RMS-116H Hobby Hizack. Sold to mobile suit collectors and enthusiasts, the Hobby Hizack was considered a "sports" machine, as it retained the speed and maneuverability of its previous military-use form. One such Hobby Hizack was owned by Neo Zeon pilot Gyunei Gass, who used this mobile suit to infiltrade Side 1's Londenion colony to retrieve his leader Char Aznable, who had just concluded secret (but ultimately futile) peace negotiations with the Earth Federation during the . later the same unit would be used to train Quess Pariah. to test her newtype ability.

RMS-119 EWAC-Zack

A reconnaissance variant of the RMS-106 Hi-Zack used during the Gryps War, the Earth Federation Forces' RMS-119 EWAC Zack could also be considered a distant relative of the old Principality of Zeon's MS-06E Zaku Reconnaissance Type. The most visible physical difference between the Hi-Zack and the EWAC-Zack was the large radome mounted on its head equipped with a passive radar system, allowing the EWAC Zack to monitor enemy forces without giving itself away with active radar signals. The EWAC Zack was also equipped with various additional infra-red, communications, and visual sensors, allowing it to monitor the enemy in a variety of methods. The radome also featured a second mono-eye that ran on a track along the perimeter of its lower side, allowing the pilot to keep a lookout on the ground while flying or jumping overhead. The EWAC Zack was originally built and operated by the Earth Federation Forces, but the invasion of Earth by Neo Zeon during the First Neo Zeon War resulted in several of these units being captured by the enemy. At least one unit was also captured by the African Liberation Front rebel group, operated as part of their "Blue Team" and painted in their distinctive light blue-on-blue colors.

MS-06M Marine Hi-Zack

During the series Zeta gundam This unit is mentioned in dilouge the animation suggests this is just an EFF name for the MS-06M (MSM-01) Zaku Marine Type it is unknown if the units received any upgrades other than a repaint to a dark blue color. It does appear the federation had produced more units using regular hi-zack frames and installing the same external equipment See MS-06 Zaku II#Underwater Type Variations for more on the original unit. This model was replaced by the Zaku mariner built by the Federation only to have the units captured by the Axis forces in ZZ gundam.

RGM-86R GM III

The GM III is a fictional mobile suit which first appeared in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.

The last upgrade of the Earth Federation's already well-established RGM-79 GM mobile suit series, the RGM-86R GM III would prove to be much more than casual upgrade for the GM than the RGM-79R GM II.

The GM III was a much needed improvement for the GM mobile suit line. As the Earth Federation's main mass production MS series, the GM II could no longer cut it by the late U.C. 0080s. Thus, it was redesigned and enhanced into the new GM III.

This major GM overhaul featured a more powerful Minovsky type ultracompact fusion reactor and improved sensors. The armor was also improved upon by mixing titanium alloy with the much studier gundarium alloy. The GM III also used a new jetpack that was based on the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II's, which gave it 37% increase in thruster speed and acceleration. The GM III also used a more powerful beam rifle for combat. Lastly, the mobile suit could be outfitted with a number of large or small missile launcher pods, which increased its possible mission roles.

A variant of GM III known as RGM-86R Nouvel GM III appears in Gundam Sentinel.

The RGM-86R proved to be a major success and the GM III would see service until U.C. 0093 as the mainstay mobile suit in the Earth Federation's military forces. However, it would later be replaced by the RGM-89 Jegan and its descendants.

RGM-89 Jegan

The RGM-89 Jegan is a fictional mobile suit from the Universal Century of the anime series Gundam.

As the successor of the RGM-79 GM series, the Jegan is the new mass produced mobile suit of the Earth Federation. The suit is lighter and more maneuverable than all the previous GM units, although it is not as well armed as the RGM-86R GM III. Nevertheless it performed very well and thus it was put into mass production. They at first were assigned to the Londo Bell task force in UC 0093 during the Second Neo Zeon War where many of this units fought against the mass produced AMS-119 Geara Doga of the Neo Zeon army. Although at first used by the Londo Bell they soon became standard in the Federation army and served as their frontline suit during the following decades, through 40 years later in the F91 series. As with many other mobile suits many variants of the Jegan were created over the years. -

Variants

RGM-89B Jegan Kai

When Jegan was still in prototype stage, another variant known as RGM-89B Jegan Kai ("Kai" is Japanese Kanji character "改". In English means "Modified".) also existed. This prototype variant of Jegan has much higher performance and influenced by feedback data from Anaheim Electronics's MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki. It also feature Gundarium armor instead of titanium alloy/ceramic composite used by standard Jegan. -

RGM-89S Stark Jegan

For heavier firepower a variant of the Jegan called the RGM-89S Stark Jegan was invented in the Second Neo Zeon War. It featured not only additional armor on the legs but also extra weapons like machine guns and missile launchers. It can even carry a nuclear warhead. However due to these extras, the speed and maneuverability was reduced but the Stark Jegan is able to eject the additional armor and weapons. -

RGM-90 Jegan Heavy Armor Type

The RGM-90 Jegan Heavy Armor Type, was developed by Anaheim Electronic as prototype mid-range fire support unit. The body is Jegan with modification for ground combat. The generator output is enhanced and the legs are strengthened to provide extra support for battles fought under Earth's gravity. Though armed with pair of beam cannons and missile pods, it lacks the close combat beam saber of its ancestor. -

RGM-89J Jegan Normal Type

The RGM-89J Jegan Normal Type, was simply an upgraded version of the old Jegan in terms of power output, speed and maneuverability. However despite this upgrade the Jegan Normal Type was no match for the newer suits of the Crossbone Vanguard during the conflict at the Frontier Side. -

RGM-89M Jegan B-Type

The RGM-89M Jegan B-Type. This variant only differed from the Normal Type in form of two 5-tube rocket packs on the hips for increased firepower. However like the other Jegan types it was no match for the Crossbone Vanguard Mobile Suits. -

RGM-89R Jegan A-Type

For use by squadron leaders Anaheim invented the RGM-89R Jegan A-Type which was the fastest and most maneuverable of the Jegan series. Again despite this it was no match for the Crossbone Vanguard. -

RGZ-91 Re-GZ

This article is about a fictional weapon from the Universal Century timeline of the anime Gundam metaseries.

The Re-GZ (short for "Refined Gundam Zeta") was an attempt from Anaheim Electronics to mass produce the famous MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam from the Gryps Conflict and the First Neo-Zeon War. Because the transformation system was very expensive to mass produce, the Re-GZ instead is able to dock with a special Back Weapon System (BWS) to change to a Waverider-like form. Because the weapons of the Re-GZ don’t work when docked, the BWS is armed with additional beam weapons and missile launchers. Despite these changes, it was later decided that the Re-GZ was too expensive for mass production, so only the prototype was completed. -

In UC 0093 the Re-GZ prototype was assigned to the Londo Bell task force, which currently assigned to fight against the Neo-Zeon army led by Char Aznable. The first person to pilot the Re-GZ was the famous One Year War Gundam pilot Amuro Ray, who used the suit in the failed attempt to stop the asteroid Fifth Luna from hitting the Earth. He fights against a Jagd Doga and Char in his MSN-04 Sazabi. Afterwards, the Re-GZ is assigned to squadron leader Kayra Su, who is defeated, and later killed, by Cyber-Newtype Gyunei Guss. During this battle the Re-GZ also looses its right arm and leg. After being brought back to the Londo Bell flagship Ra Cailum, the still damaged Re-GZ is finally used by young Londo Bell officer Chan Agi, who uses the suit to fight against Quess Paraya in the massive mobile armor NZ-333 Alpha Azieru. During the battle, she fires her missiles on the Azieru's cockpit and accidentally kills Quess but also destroys the mobile armor. Because of this, Hathaway Noa, who was in love with Quess, uses the beam rifle of his RGM-89 Jegan to destroy the Re-GZ, thus killing Chan.

There are also another prototype of Re-GZ known as RGZ-91B Re-GZ Custom. Unlike Re-GZ, the Re-GZ Custom is fully transformable mobile suit. It also has more powerful weapons and feature wing binders similar to Zeta Gundam.

RX-105 Xi Gundam

The RX-105 Xi Gundam is a one of the many mobile suits, weaponry giant robots control by a pilot, created in a fictional universe of the Japanese novel then turned series of anime created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. After the original anime by Tomino under the name Mobile Suit Gundam aired on 1979 in Japan became a big success hit, many novelists and artist joined the anime studio, Sunrise, Inc., that produce the Gundam series to write new stories and to design the Machines, and one of these artist, Moriki Yasuhiro, was the one designed the RX-105 Xi Gundam created in a series of three novels called written by Tomino in 1989.

The RX-105 Xi Gundam was one of the four main mobile suit prototypes featured in the "Hathaway’s Flash" series after in the Gundam story Universal Century timeline. The story centered on Hathaway Noa, son of Bright Noa who was the captain of White Base in the original series "Mobile Suit Gundam", when he joined a terrorist group called Mafty against the Earth Federation, and stole one of the four Earth Federation prototype mobile suits for an attempt to attack a meeting of Federation leaders in Australia. And the mobile suit Hathaway stole was the RX-105 Xi Gundam.

Besides featuring in the novel, the RX-105 Xi Gundam was also one of the playable characters in the video game called SD Gundam G Generation portable for the Playstation Portable system. Other than RX-105 Xi, the game also included a list of Gundams from different titles including television series, movies, and comics to create a simulation role playing game.

RX-75 Guntank

The RX-75-4 Guntank was the first prototype Earth Federation mobile suit developed in the "V Project" of the anime Mobile Suit Gundam. However, the Guntank was hardly a mobile suit at all. The Guntank had the torso and arms of a mobile suit, but possessed tank tread-like legs. It also lacked any sort of hands and had a canopy-style cockpit on the head, along with the cockpit in the torso. Like all "V Project" mobile suits, the Guntank used the Core Block System.

The Guntank was developed when the first rumors of the Principality of Zeon's mobile suits reached the Federation. The Guntank was designed as an anti-mobile suit and artillery mobile suit. Although its performance in this role fell below expectations, it did pack a heavy punch. Its main weapons were twin 180mm recoilless cannons, which were effective at both long and medium ranges. The Guntank's two arms ended in four-barrel missile launchers instead of hands. These weapons provided good cover fire against enemy tanks and aircraft, but were less effective against enemy mobile suits.

At the attack on Side 7, only one of the RX-75-4 Guntanks survived the attack. The last prototype made its way to the Pegasus-Class assault cruiser "White Base". The Guntank design fought alongside the RX-77-2 Guncannon and the RX-78-2 Gundam, but it was easily outclassed by them. However, after the death of the Guntank pilot Ryu Jose, the mobile suit was upgraded to be used by a single pilot in the canopy-style cockpit. The RX-75-4 Guntank was finally decommissioned at the Federation's General Headquarters at Jaburo, South America in November UC 0079.

In the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV anime, the RX-75-4 Guntank was "not" decommissioned at Jaburo but continued service on board the "White Base" until it was destroyed at the Zeon space fortress A Baoa Qu. The discrepancy between the two versions of events exists because the Guntank was seen more as a 'super robot' genre mecha than the 'real robot' genre mecha that the series was aiming for. The movie version of events is considered more canonical, as it reflects the latest version of Tomino's vision.

"RX-75-4 Guntank" first appear in Mobile Suit Gundam, design by Kunio Okawara.

A mass production model of Guntank was produced later in the war, designated RX-75 Guntank Mass Production Type. The mass production type lost the Core Block system to cut costs; the new model could also swivel its upper torso. The original Guntank's 180mm cannons were replaced with smaller 120mm cannons; these cannons could be removed and replaced with other appendages. Some mass produced guntanks were equipped with a forward bulldozer mounted on the front glacias plate and crane for recovery work.

"RX-75 Guntank Mass Production Type" first appear in .

After the One Year War, the development of Guntanks continued, resulting in the RMV-1 Guntank II, which was even more tank-like (and less mobile suit-like) than its predecessors. A pair of recoilless 120mm cannon mounted on its head turret gave it wider firing arcs than previous Guntank models. The new torso was capable of independently rotating, so the arms were replaced with rocket and missile launchers. The new Guntank was designed in every way as a vehicle for ground combat. Some Japanese reference material classifies the Guntank II as a "mobile vehicle" instead of a "mobile suit", hence the RMV code in its model number.

RX-77 Guncannon

The RX-77-2 Guncannon was the second mobile suit design model that stemmed from the Earth Federation's "Vinsion Project" or "V Project" in the mecha anime Mobile Suit Gundam. It was developed during the One Year War in response to the Principality of Zeon's MS-05 Zaku I and MS-06 Zaku II mobile suits.

The Guncannon was a step up from the RX-75-4 Guntank; while the Guntank was more "tank" than mobile armor, the Guncannon was a true mobile suit with limbs. However, it did share the Guntank's Core Block System, using the same FF-X7 Core Fighter.

The first Guncannon was the prototype RX-77-1A Guncannon A, which had poor mobility due to its heavy armor. The second version, RX-77-2 Guncannon, corrected this problem. As defensive weapons, it mounted two 60 mm vulcan guns in the head. However, the Guncannon's primary weapons were the twin 240 mm cannons mounted on the shoulders, which were used for the mobile suit's design purpose: mid-range support. The Guncannon was also the first mobile suit used by the Earth Federal Forces capable of firing a beam rifle.

The Guncannon was less mobile but more heavily armored than its cousin, the RX-78-2 Gundam. Unfortunately, the extra armor provided no additional protection against beam weapons, and powerful conventional weapons (such as the Giant Bazooka used by some Zeon mobile suits) were capable of causing severe damage. It also lacked any sort of melee weapon, making it helpless when an enemy mobile suit got too close. Also, its 240 mm cannons only held 20 rounds per cannon, meaning the pilot had to learn how to conserve cannon ammunition and use it wisely.

During the Zeon attack of Side 7, only one RX-77-2 Guncannon survived the attack. It was stationed aboard the "Pegasus"-Class assault carrier "White Base" and piloted by Kai Shiden. However, when the "White Base" made its way to Jaburo, another unit was transferred to the "White Base" to replace the Guntank. It was piloted by Hayato Kobayashi. To separate the two units, they were named the "C-108" and "C-109". Both units were heavily damaged at the last battle of the One Year War at the Zeon's space fortress A Baoa Qu. Kai's Guncannon later reappears in Hayato's mobile suit museum in Zeta Gundam.

The RX-77-2 Guncannon was the only "V Project" mobile suit to ever be produced in limited numbers. It served as a main mobile suit until the Federation introduced the RGM-79 GM; however, due to the high cost of beam weapons, many Guncannon units were armed with conventional machine guns or rifles. Some unlucky pilots were not issued a hand weapon at all, and had to rely on the Guncannon's built-in armaments. In the "Gundam 0079: Zeonic Front" video game, a three-man Guncannon squad was commanded by young, brash Federation pilot, Lieutenant Agar (who would later become pilot of the RX-78-6 Mudrock Gundam). This team would pursue the infamous "Midnight Fenrir" Zeon special forces mobile suit team up to the Battle of Jaburo. Also in "Cross Dimension 0079" video game, at least two Guncannons was used by Albatross transportation team in the Gobi Desert, though game's dialogue said they already lost several of them.

"RX-77-1A Guncannon A" first appear as part of Kunio Okawara's MS Collection original design series while "RX-77-2 Guncannon" first appear in Mobile Suit Gundam and both of them were design by Kunio Okawara.

A variation on the RX-77-2 was also intended to be mass produced very late in the One Year War. This version, the RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Type did away with the Core Block System and used titanium/ceramic composite armor instead of Lunar Titanium. It possessed additional verniers and thrusters, making it even more powerful than the older model. However, this revision was never produced as planned, with only a few suits being distributed to units such as the "Gray Phantom" and the White Dingo unit in Australia.

"RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Type" first appear in , design by Yutaka Izubuchi.

The basic model of Guncannon also developed into the RX-77-3 Guncannon Heavy Arms Type, intended to stand on its own. This revision was a simple upgrade of the RX-77-2 with improved armor and armaments. Nevertheless, the design was a success, leading to the production of the RX-77-4 Guncannon II. Instead of 240mm conventional guns, the Guncannon II carried a single beam cannon and targeting sensor, making it much lighter and more mobile than previous incarnations.

Both "RX-77-3 Guncannon Heavy Arms Type" and "RX-77-4 Guncannon II" first appear as part of Mobile Suit Variations and design by Kunio Okawara.

In the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" TV anime, only one Guncannon was aboard the "White Base" until the final battle at A Baoa Qu; instead of a second Guncannon unit, it was accompanied by the RX-75-4 Guntank. The movie version of events is considered more canonical, as it reflects Tomino's decision to emphasize 'real robot' elements and downplay or remove remnants of the 'super robot' genre.

RX-78 Gundam

The RX-78 Gundam is a series of fictional testbed mobile suits in the Gundam Universal Century developed by the Earth Federation. The titular mobile suit of the series, the RX-78-2 Gundam, is a member of this series. RX-78-2 Gundam served as the iconic symbol of the Gundam universes, which sparkled creation of different Gundam Stories.

Concepts and development

The RX-78's initial concept was that of a powered armor, the primary design for Yoshiyuki Tomino's proposed series "Freedom Fighter Gunboy". The series later changed its name to Mobile Suit Gundam and Kunio Okawara was given Tomino's concept to shape into a finalized design for the anime. Okawara did various designs, including the original design on the right, before settling on the current, more samurai-styled design on the left. One of the common questions asked is why did the enemies in the series keep referring to the RX-78-2 as "White" while it is a mix of blue, red, and white. Tomino's response in the novel version of "Gundam" is that the original design was to be a grayscale machine, made up of mostly white and light gray coloring. However, "Sunrise" disapproved of the coloring and insisted the unit to be painted in brighter colors to attract attention like other Super Robot anime at that time. As a side note, Katoki Hajime stated in the Gundam Sentinel special edition that, the MSA-0011 S Gundam also went through a similar process but the reason for it is because Bandai authorities thinking the S Gundam did not give a Gundam-ish look until he painted it in the colour scheme of RX-78-2.

RX-78-2 later received various variations including a preceding model RX-78-1 and later models RX-78-3~8 by Okawara. Other mechanical designers also add in to design units like Yutaka Izubuchi's RX-78-NT-1 from Mobile Suit Gundam 0080, and Shoji Kawamori's and Katoki Hajime's Gundam Development Project designs from Gundam 0083. It has also been redesigned for several times by other artists; in particular, the Katoki Hajime version of the Gundam (referred to by Gundam fans and Bandai themselves as "Ver. Ka") has become popular enough to be made into both injection plastic model kits sold by Bandai and resin-based garage kits sold by their B-Club subsidiary.

The continuing popularity in Japan of this mobile suit has led Bandai to build a 1.5m tall model version which will go on sale in Japan in 2007. Role in plot

The deployment of the Principality of Zeon's mobile suits, the MS-05B Zaku I and the MS-06F Zaku II, in the One Year War had given the small nation a major tactical edge over the much larger Earth Federation. Capable of propellant-less maneuvering thanks to their AMBAC systems, and able to be retrofitted to suit a variety of missions and environments, they easily outclassed the Federation's arsenal of fighters and ground vehicles. Realizing that the gap needed to be closed, the Federation instituted Project V (the Vinson Plan in the English translation), a development program that would produce a Federation mobile suit design that would be able to be mass produced. While the ultimate result of the program was the RGM-79 GM, the engineers in the project tested several design concepts for the mass-production units in the RX-78 series. Some of the developments in the RX-78 models were later incorporated into the GM line, but many were scrapped due to cost and/or complexity.The official stance is that only 8 RX-78 were produced during the One Year War and this should not be confused with RX-78- [1~8] .

The last number is associated with the model number instead of the quantity of units. There were 8 variations of the RX-78 thus having designations ranging from RX-78-1 to RX-78-8. However, the original 8 units were continuously remodeled and therefore create a misunderstanding that there were a larger number of RX-78 units produced. However, the EFAF (Air Force) created their own RX-78E (GT FOUR/Gundam Transformer/Flight & Operations Unifications Reactors) and is different from the 8 RX-78s produced. Another extra unit is the RX-78XX which uses scrap parts of the RX-78s and are also not considered to be one of the 8 units. The NT-1 is actually RX-78 unit 4 remodeled (original model unknown). After the One Year War, the GP series are numbered after the RX-78 convention but of course are newly produced units.

The RX-78 series introduced Minovsky particle weaponry to mobile suits, developing and deploying the first successful beam rifle and beam saber. These would form the primary component of mobile suit weaponry for at least the next century and a half. The core block system, which allowed the RX-78's pilot to escape the destruction of his mobile suit in a functional aerospace fighter, would be dropped for expense from subsequent units but reused on occasion (most notably in the Anaheim Electronics MSZ-010 Double Zeta Gundam during the First Neo-Zeon War) and resurrected by the League Militaire in the UC 0150s on the LM312V04 Victory Gundam.

After the cessation of the One Year War, the Federation opened up a black-ops mobile suit development program, the Gundam Development Project, in order to develop mobile suits to fill roles that had appeared in analysis of combat operations from the One Year War. The major reason that the project was designated black-op was because of the RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis", which was armed with an atomic bazooka in violation of the Antarctic Treaty. After the events of Gundam 0083, the records of the Gundam Development Project were stricken from the official record.

The RX-78 line was finally superseded in UC 0087 by the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II developed by the Titans.

Merchandising

The appearance of the unit is not limited to Gundam series. RX-78-2 Gundam is one of the basic units that appear in the Super Robot Wars series, ever since the first game for the Game Boy. Later series keep referencing the RX-78's proficiency in combat having a white Mobile Suit appearing in the middle of the battle field, and anything white is mistaken as a Gundam type Mobile Suit along with the famous cry of "It's a Gundam!". For example, in episode 9 of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, the phrase is overheard while Tsuruya is searching for Mikuru.

The RX-78 is a pop culture icon in Japan, to the point where Pepsi released several series of Pepsi bottles with special-edition bottle caps featuring miniature statues of various Mobile Suits from the many Gundam anime released over the years. RX-79 Gundam

The RX-79 Gundam is a series of fictional mobile suits in the Gundam Universal Century developed by the Earth Federation.

The RX-78 development program, in addition to the experimental RX-78 Gundam, managed to generate a significant stockpile of mobile suit parts. The Federation, not wanting to have such parts go to waste, used these stockpiles to create a line of pre-production mobile suits used to field test mobile suit tactics.

RX-79 Gundam (Mass-Production Review Unit) /Prototype GM

Due to the high specification of RX-78 series, most of the parts that failed to meet the quality control of the RX-78's production line were still usable, and had high performance specs. The stockpiles of these parts inspired the engineers of the Earth Federation to start a new line of Mobile Suit using them. That is RX-79 Gundam (Mass-Production Review Unit) /Prototype GM (ガンダム(量産検討機)/プロトタイプジム), which served as the test-bed for further refinement of the GM. The legs were the first part to be reviewed and determined to be too complicated to mass-produce. The thruster units were simplified and the more expensive thruster parts were used to produce a small number of RGM-79 [E] for space combat. Less expensive parts were then used to increase the ground performance and technology put into use in the RX-79 [G] as Ground combat units for more testing. Finally, they were able to produce the RGM-79 [G] ground combat GM. Due to the high cost of the camera eyes, RX-77 main camera was used in the GM series instead of the Gundam Head. By this period, the Earth Federation finished the production line of GM and used a lot of simplified parts tested on the RX-79.

RX-79 [G] Gundam Ground Type

The RX-79 [G] Gundam Ground Type was used most notably by the Kojima Battalion operating in Southeast Asia, which fielded 12 RX-79 [G] units. However, because the RX-79 [G] were constructed from spare RX-78 parts, repair of damaged units became a tricky matter due to the unavailability of replacement parts. The result was the creation of custom RX-79 [G] units such as the RX-79(G)Ez8 Gundam Ez8 piloted by Kojima Battalion 08th MS Team commander Shiro Amada, or Karen Joshua's Gundam with a GM head. Federation Research and Development used three RX-79 [G] units in their EXAM development program (see entry on Blue Destiny below).

RX-79 [G] Ez8 Gundam Ez8

As the One Year War continued to drag on, the Earth Federation Forces began to put the vast majority of their resources towards creating and maintaining the mass-produced GM line of mobile suits. This left many of the Federation's older units without the adequate supplies needed to undergo repairs and regular maintenance. This put more trouble to the RX-79 [G] Gundam Ground Type since they were constructed primarily of spare parts left over from the RX-78 development project anyway. Due to such supply shortages, when 08th Mobile Suit Team pilot Ensign Shiro Amada's RX-79 [G] Gundam Ground Type was all but destroyed during an ambush on the Zeon's prototype Apsalus II mobile armor, it had to be rebuilt from the ground up.

The resulting amalgama of spare parts was given the new model number RX-79 [G] Ez8, code named the Gundam Ez8 (Ez8 standing for "Extra zero-8". The designation "Ez8" appears to be a reference to the M4A3E8 "Easy Eight" variant of the M4 Sherman medium tank of World War II). The Gundam Ez8, despite being constructed largely of spare parts, was actually capable of slightly higher performance then the RX-79 [G] Gundam Ground Type. By removing the fixed weapons in the left side of the chest the Kojima Battalion engineers were able utilize the extra space to improve upon the engines and reactor, which gave the Gundam Ez8 higher generator output, better propulsion, greater thrust, and superior general performance. The Gundam Ez8's armor placement was also revised, giving it added protection around the cockpit block and chest, and around the ankles.

To compensate for the removal of the chest-based vulcan and the multi-launcher the Gundam Ez8 had a 12.7mm anti-personnel machine gun placed in the mecha's abdominal region, as well as twin 35mm machine guns mounted in the head. The Ez8 still retained the two beam sabers stored in the compartments in the sides of the legs, and was still capable of using all of the armaments its predecessor could although Shiro heavily favored the 100mm machine gun. The traditional Gundam "V-fin" communications array that was mounted on the forehead was also done away with, opting instead to replace it with a more durable rabbit-ear communications antenna on the right side of its head. The Gundam Ez8's backpack design was unchanged, which still allowed it to mount mission packs and field equipment options.

Shiro Amada's Gundam Ez8 would continue to see service in the South-eastern Asian theatre during the One Year War, until it was destroyed during the battle to overtake Zeon's mountain facility where the completed Apsalus III was about to emerge.

RX-79Ez8 Gundam Ez8 Kai

Some of the SD Gundam G Generation games also include an upgraded version of Gundam Ez8, the RX-79Ez8 Gundam Ez8 Kai. This uncanonical variation first appeared in the alternate storyline of "SD Gundam: G Generation Gather Beat". The Ez8 Kai is modified to allow it to be used in space combat and can be equipped with custom parts to become the RX-79Ez8/HAC Gundam Ez8 Heavy Armed Custom or the RX-79Ez8/HMC Gundam Ez8 High Mobility Custom. The HAC parts armed the Gundam Ez8 Heavy Armed Custom with two Salamis class cruiser beam cannons, while the HMC parts featured additional verniers to increase its mobility. However, since Ez8 Kai is based on the original frame of Gundam Ez8, which was not designed to support such equipment packs, the HAC parts' mass increase reduced the Ez8 Kai's agility to where it could not fight effectively in close-combat, while HMC parts would use too much energy and force the Ez8 Kai to use the less-powerful beam spray gun II instead of its standard beam rifle. -

RX-79BD Gundam "Blue Destiny" Series

While Zeon recognized the effectiveness of Newtypes in battle, they also realized that natural Newtypes were very rare. Zeon thus experimented with increasing the number of Newtype-class pilots in two ways:

* Development of artificial Newtypes, which did not produce results until too late in the One Year War, and

* Development of control systems that would allow regular pilots to operate at Newtype skill levels.

Zeon researcher Professor Chlust Morses, as part of the latter program, developed the EXAM system and then defected to the Federation, bringing the EXAM technology with him. The Federation immediately began their own EXAM program, code named "Blue Destiny", to take advantage of this technology. RX-79BD-1 GM Blue Destiny Unit 1, RX-79BD-2 Gundam Blue Destiny Unit 2, and RX-79BD-3 Gundam Blue Destiny Unit 3 were built from RX-79 [G] units, though the RX-79BD-1 used a GM head, rather than a standard Gundam head.

The stress that EXAM exerts on the pilot, however, limited any widespread adoption. EXAM lead researcher Alf Chamara went through several test pilots until he found the perfect candidate in Federation test pilot Yuu Kajima. Kajima spearheaded the California Base assault in the RX-79BD-1, where he confronted the Zeon MS-08TX(EXAM) Efreet Custom, an EXAM mobile suit piloted by Zeon ace Major Nimbus Schterzen in combat, resulting in the destruction of both the RX-79BD-1 and the MS-08TX(EXAM). Schterzen then stole the RX-79BD-2 and escaped to space, forcing Kajima to pursue him with the RX-79BD-3. The two EXAM units then clashed in space, resulting in Schterzen's defeat at the hands of Kajima, and the destruction of both the RX-79BD-2 and the RX-79BD-3.

RX-93 Nu Gundam

The Rx-93 ν Gundam (Nu Gundam) is a Mobile Suit designed by Yutaka Izubuchi piloted by the main character, Amuro Ray, in the animated movie, .

The Rx-93 ν Gundam was Amuro Ray's personal Mobile Suit during the 2nd Neo Zeon war against his archrival Char Aznable. Although it was only partially finished at the time of its deployment, it proved to be a formidable Gundam. Incorporating Psyco Frame (サイコフレーム) technologies secretly provided to Anaheim Electronics by Char Aznable of Neo Zeon, the ν Gundam was able to use Psycommu (サイコミュ) weapons, fin funnels, and channel the emotions and newtype energies of a suitable newtype pilot. Despite its name, the fin funnels equipped on ν Gundam are actually "bits" since they have built-in generators instead of Energy-capacitors (E-cap) like most funnels. While this made them much more expensive to construct, and allowed less modules for equipping than the standard, this had an enormous benefit by giving the fin funnels a tremendously long operational time. Circling the battlefield on their own, the fin funnels could be utilized in far more creative and strategic ways than standard funnels could. The actual beam of the fin funnels was also larger and stronger than usual since each had its own generator. The fin funnels also had the ability to generate a unique beam shield, known as Fin Funnel barrier, providing a defense against both beam and solid projectiles. Although these unique funnels proved incredibly effective and flexible in purpose, they were also much larger than the standard funnel which made them easier targets to shoot down if used too brashly. When combined with legendary ace pilot Amuro Ray's immense skill and experience, this powerful state of the art Mobile Suit was able to almost single handedly keep the Neo-Zeon's elite forces at bay, and its unique Psycommu system known as the psyco-frame was put to the test by Amuro for this harrowing battle.

Amuro used the ν Gundam in his final battle against Char Aznable where he defeated his enemy’s mobile suit MSN-04 Sazabi. After that he used his Gundam to stop the asteroid base Axis from falling on Earth. The psyco-frame system, incorporated in the mobile suit, caused a powerful phenomenon as a result of the wish of all people and drove Axis away from Earth. Both Amuro and Char vanished with the Gundam.

In the original novel "Beltorchika's Children" Amuro faced Char's MSN-04-2 Nightingale with the Hi-ν Gundam, the fully developed version of the ν. Although never seen on screen, this Mobile Suit is considered one of the most powerful Mobile Suits in the Universal Century's history and is quite popular, often seen in video game series's such as the famous "Super Robot Wars" series.

The word Nu is a Greek letter (ν) and resembles the English letter v and the design was by Yutaka Izubuchi. The ν Gundam is one of the most prolific and well known Gundam design in the metaverse's history. In fact, even now after more than a decade after the film's debut, the ν Gundam is often seen as a representative mecha for Gundam in general, being Amuro's ultimate MS. The ν Gundam is also one of the only Gundam type Mobile Suits to use funnel type weapons, the four others hailing from alternate universes: Gundam Rose from "Mobile Fighter G Gundam" of the Future Century, ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam from "Gundam SEED" of the Cosmic Era, "ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam" from "Gundam SEED Destiny", and ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam, also from "Gundam SEED Destiny". ν Gundam however, remains the most prolific Gundam type to use funnel weapons.

Variations

FA-93HWS ν Gundam Heavy Weapons System Type

Anaheim Electronics's plan to improve ν Gundam by equipping it with removable chobam armor to increase its protection. ν Gundam's shield also replaced by a larger shield with built-in thrusters, to counter the Heavy Weapon System's increased mass. The additional heavy beam rifle also increased the firepower of ν Gundam. However, the Heavy Weapon System plan was never completed due to ν Gundam's rush deployment and eventual MIA status.

RX-93 ν Gundam Double Fin Funnel Type

This is basically the same as the RX-93"v" ν Gundam but with the large beam saber's recharge rack removed to carry six additional fin funnels. This configuration was never used in combat.

RX-93-2 (RX-93-ν-2) Hi-ν Gundam

The completed version of ν Gundam that appeared in novel "Beltorchika's Children". Although the Hi-ν shared the same physical characteristics as the regular ν, it sported an exclusively white and light blue color scheme instead and featured more powerful boosters around its body. Its most prolific difference is its distinct back booster system and revised fin funnel system. The more basic backpack unit of the prototype ν is replaced with a dual long booster system with two protruding long booster's below them. The Fin Funnels are attached to the top booster's in a downward fashion, three on each booster. This made the Hi-ν appear to have elegant wing like protrusions from the back. Besides the obvious visual differences, Hi-ν Gundam also armed with an improved ν hyper bazooka and a hyper mega bazooka launcher. The latter was an improved model of mega bazooka launcher used by the MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki during the Gryps Conflict. When in use, the hyper bazooka launcher would connect directly to the Ra Cailum's reactor and was powerful enough to destroy a fragment of the asteroid base Axis. Hi-ν has almost every major trademark "most powerful weapon". It is beyond state of the art. The unit has received a new design in Gundam Ace December, 2006 issue, for the coming release of Master Grade model.

RX-94 Mass Production Type ν Gundam

Anaheim Electronics's mass production mobile suit intended to replace the RGM-89 Jegan. It is based on the ν Gundam but with some features, like the psycoframe, removed. The fin funnel backpack can be swaped with an incom backpack for use by an oldtype pilot. However, its high performance was proportional to its high cost and the mass production was canceled and only a small number was produced, where one appeared in the side story manga "REON". It featured a turquoise shade of blue and light blue color scheme. It also appeared in some of the Super Robot Wars series, most notable in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 which the RX-94 was used by one of main character "Cobray Gordon" for early stages.
