1991 Japanese motorcycle Grand Prix

The 1991 Japanese motorcycle Grand Prix was the first round of the 1991 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 22nd-24th March, 1991 at the Suzuka Circuit.

500 cc race report

Kevin Schwantz on pole, Wayne Rainey on the 2nd row, 2 seconds back. Schwantz gets a good start, and a quartet of Schwantz, Rainey, Mick Doohan and John Kocinski develops. Wayne Gardner and Eddie Lawson are in a fight for 5th.

Doohan takes the front, and Gardner manages to bridge, making it a quintet at the front. Rainey and Doohan exchange the lead while Gardner starts to go off the back.

Going into the last lap, Schwantz takes the lead going into the chicane, but makes a mistake and has to sit up slightly, allowing the group to gather up again. Doohan takes the lead into turn 1 from Schwantz, Rainey and Kocinski. Schwantz passes Doohan on Spoon, and Doohan can't respond until 130R, but Doohan goes wide and has to sit up as he heads into the rumble strip.
