Of the eight boats Slovakia entered in canoe/kayak races in Athens, the one that was the favourite for a medal was the two-time defending world champion kayaking Men's four crew. They handily won their heat to advance directly to the final, but in the final they had a poor start, sitting only 7th through 250 metres, and could not make up any ground on the leading boats, though they did hold off a late charge from Bulgaria to earn a bronze medal. Two other boats made finals, but neither medalled. In the women's K-1 500 metre, Marcela Erbanova won her opening heat, but could not keep that form into the final, where she finished 5th.

lalom

Slovakia had high medal hopes in slalom canoeing, as the team boasted two Olympic champions, 1996 gold medalist Martikán and the Hochschorner brothers defending their Sydney title. In addition, Elena Kaliská, who had topped the World Cup standings in three of the last four years, was a further medal threat. Martikan fought a tight battle with 2000 Olympic champion Tony Estanguet in the Men's C1 Single, barely edging the Frenchman in the heats and semis. Both men had a safe cushion back to the remainder of the pack, so the battle in the final was one-on-one for gold and silver. Martikan appeared to have won after the final run, but a post-race review led to him being assessed two penalty seconds, and losing out to Estanguet by just 0.12 seconds.

Kaliska's road to gold in the Women's Single event was much less dramatic. She trailed a German canoeist after the heats, but had the two fastest runs in both the semi and the final, and did not commit any penalties, winning by more than four-and-a-half seconds. Another Slovak canoeist was in the final of the women's event, but Gabriela Stacherová committed a fifty-point penalty and ended up in 10th place. The Hochschorner brothers, Pavol and Peter had a similarly drama-free path to their gold medal, winning every run but the final by at least two full seconds. They actually finished second on the final run, but they had built up a five-second lead in the semi-final, and so managed to hold onto their gold medal position.
