Virovitica (in Croatian) or Verőce (in Hungarian) is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the autonomous region Croatia-Slavonia within the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory is presently in eastern Croatia. Verőce is the Hungarian name for the city Virovitica. The capital of the county moved from Virovitica to Osijek (Croatian, in Hungarian: "Eszék") in the late 18th century.

Geography

Verőce county shared borders with the Hungarian counties Somogy, Baranya, Bács-Bodrog, Szerém, Pozsega and Belovár-Körös (the latter three in Croatia-Slavonia). The county stretched along the right (southern) bank of the river Drave, down to its confluence with the river Danube. Its area was 4867 km² around 1910.

History

Verőce county became part of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 12th century. Verőce county was re-established in 1718, after it was liberated from Ottoman occupation. In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon 1920), the county became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia). Since 1991, when Croatia became independent from Yugoslavia, the county is part of Croatia.
