Earl of Desart

Earl of Desart

The title of Earl of Desart was created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1793. The title became extinct following the death of the 5th earl in 1934.

The Earls of Desart bore the subsidiary titles of "Viscount Desart" (1781), "Viscount Castle Cuffe" (1793), and "Baron Desart" (1733) in the Peerage of Ireland. In 1909, the 5th Earl was created "Baron Desart" in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, but this title, along with all the others, became extinct upon his death.

The family seat was Desart Court, Co Kilkenny, in the Republic of Ireland. The manor house itself was burnt down in the early 1920's as a result of an IRA attack.

The title should not be confused with the title Earl of Dysart, created in the Tollemache family.
