Jimboomba, Queensland

Jimboomba, Queensland

Jimboomba is a town of approximately 1400 persons, as recorded in the 2001 census, in south-eastern Queensland, Australia, on the Mount Lindesay Highway 47 km south of Brisbane. The town is in the Logan City Local Government Area. It has a number of primary schools, a high school, fire and ambulance services, a police station, domestic shopping and medical-dental services for the surrounding, largely, rural residential properties. It has a small industrial area that provides services for vehicles, irrigation and home-water supplies, produce supplies, light manufacturing and landscape gardening.

Cattle grazing, dairy farming and hobby farms are the main industries. There are large numbers of horses kept on or near residential properties for riding, for pleasure and for competition.

Jimboomba was serviced by the Bethania-Beaudesert branch railway line that was established to service the abattoir in Beaudesert. The line was closed in 1992 and then reopened and operated as far as Logan Village by railway enthusiasts from 1999 until mid-2004. Because of fire-damage to a stream over-bridge (immediately south of Jimboomba, at Cedar Grove) and lack of funds the line has closed permanently.Fact|date=February 2007

The Queensland government's current plan for the Mt Lindesay/North Beaudesert area is that it will become part of the Brisbane conurbation with Jimboomba an outer suburb of Brisbane by 2066 (or before). However this is unlikely as with the recent council amalgamations Jimboomba has become part of the Logan City shire.

However, this South East Queensland Regional draft Plan—that shows all of the northern part of the former Shire of Beaudesert as an "Investigation Area" because of the large area around Jimboomba that has been allocated to rural residential A and B (4000 to 10,000 m² blocks)—indicates the need for land to be redeveloped into much smaller housing units (450 to 600 m²). Jimboomba is a variation of the Aboriginal word Gimboomba meaning - Loud thunder little rain.
