List of Tyne and Wear Metro stations

North Shields Metro Station is on the Tyne and Wear Metro Yellow line.

It was formerly the terminus of the now defunct Blue line (St. James - North Shields), which used a bay platform on the south side, at the west end of the station. When adapted for Metro use, the platform-level canopies and ramps from the entrance to the platform remained, but the station entrance was completely rebuilt.

The original North Shields station (just Shields until 1874) was the terminus of the Newcastle & North Shields Railway, and it opened on 20 June 1839. It was replaced in 1890 by the present station, located at the western end of North Shields Tunnel (originally Tynemouth Tunnel).

The station is one of the busiest on the system outside of central Newcastle with a recorded patronage of almost 1.1 million passengers in 2008-9.[1]

The 333 bus service operated by Arriva North East and Nexus links the station with the nearby North Shields Ferry Landing for connections to South Shields via the Shields Ferry.

As part of an ongoing programme of refurbishment, Nexus and DB Regio have announced that demolition of the current North Shields Metro Station will begin on 12 March 2011. The re-built station is due to fully re-open in January 2012.

Ticketing anomalies

Different zonal fare systems are used for Metro single tickets and inter-modal Transfare tickets, which means that for a number of journeys a Transfare may actually be cheaper than a standard Metro-only ticket.
