1877 FA Cup Final

1877 FA Cup Final

The 1877 FA Cup Final took place at Kennington Oval in London, and was won by Wanderers by two goals to one against the Oxford University.

The Final

Both sides had been on the winning sides before in the final; the Wanderers winning in both 1872 and 1873, and Oxford University taking the trophy in 1874.

Wanderers won the game after extra time 2–1 with goals from William Lindsay and Jarvis Kenrick, with Arthur Kinnaird conceding a bizarre own goal for Oxford University's solitary goal. Kinnaird caught a high cross, but then ended up carrying the ball over the line with his momentum. The referee immediately signalled a goal. Luckily for Kinnaird, his team still won, sparing further blushes.

Route to the Final

There were only six rounds in the whole tournament, including the final, and both clubs were awarded a bye at different stages, so each team played only five matches.

Wanderers overcame Saffron Waldon, Southall, Pilgrims and Cambridge University en route to the final, while Oxford University defeated Old Salopians, 105th Regiment, Queens Park and Upton Park (after a replay).
