The town of Bute is located in the northern Yorke Peninsula, approximately 40 kilometres east of Wallaroo and 24 kilometres west of Snowtown. It was proclaimed as a town in 1884 and named after the Isle of Bute, in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. The town is surrounded by agricultural and pastoral land.

Railways

Bute was situated on the narrow gauge (1067mm) line between Wallaroo and Brinkworth. This line was converted to broad gauge (1600mm) in 1927. ["Horse and Steam, Wheat and Copper" Callaghan, W.H.
