'Jacqueline Hillier' is a cultivar of the natural hybrid "Ulmus × elegantissima" Horwood which originated from a specimen found in a Birmingham, England garden circa 1960.

Description

'JH' makes a small to medium-sized suckering shrub of dense habit, bearing small, double-toothed scabrid leaves 25 mm to 35 mm long on densely-hairy twigs.

Pests and diseases

Resistance to Dutch elm disease is not known, but is probably academic as the shrub is unlikely to attain the height at which it would attract the attention of the bark beetles that act as vectors of the disease. In trials in the USA, 'JH' was found to be virtually unaffected by the Elm Leaf Beetle "Xanthogaleruca luteola" [http://www.sunshinenursery.com/survey.htm] .

Cultivation

It is commonly found in cultivation in the USA and Europe, where it is considered particularly suitable for low hedges, or even bonsai.

Etymology

The cultivar was named for the daughter of Sir Harold Hillier.
