Future uses of the Selaparang airport
Due to the delays in opening the New Lombok International Airport the use of the Selaparang Airport for both domestic and international flights has been continued and the proposed closure of this airport has been delayed.
Proposed regional domestic operations
Several proposals have been floated for future use, including maintaining limited domestic operations at Selaparang Airport to service regional requirements including flights to and from Bali (DPS). Tourism activity is currently focused upon the west coast of the island from near Meninting northward to include Senggigi, Gili islands, Tanjung and Rinjani. The new International airport is located in southern central Lombok near Praya and is a significant distance further away than the existing facilities at Ampenan. Many of the islands tourism operators are concerned that the added surface travel times and complexity may negatively impact the islands recovering tourism sector. The contrary argument may be presented that the location of the new International Airport near Praya in the central south of the island will open up opportunities both in the south and eastern areas of the island and that suitable commercial shuttle services will emerge to link the new airport to the established tourism destinations in the western and northern areas of the island.
Proposed development as a Regional Aviation Hub
The use of Selaparang Airport to develop a General Aviation Hub for Indonesia may offer considerable opportunities for Indonesia's tourism triangle of Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa. Currently federal law restricts the development of General Aviation in Indonesia due to national laws preventing other than Indonesian registered pilots to operate inside Indonesian airspace without a suitably qualified Indonesian pilot present in the cockpit.
