Grant Petersen

Grant Petersen is an American bicycle company-owner. He was the mind behind Bridgestone Bicycle Company during the 80s and 90s. After the closure of the Bridgestone Bicycle Company he started Rivendell Bicycle Works, a mail-order bicycle company in Walnut Creek, California. Petersen is famous in the cycling community as an opponent of trends towards more complicated designs and the prioritisation of speed, light weight and racing-lead fashion over tradition, comfort and durability.

Rivendell Bicycle Works specializes in lugged steel bicycles. With a focus on tradition and classic design Rivendell has created a distinctive product. Initially conceived in opposition to mass-produced, mass-marketed design, Rivendell's aesthetic and design philosophy has itself contributed to the establishment of a strong niche in cycling fashion.

In addition to lugged steel frames, signatures of this trend have included leather saddles and handlebar tape, the use of downtube or bar-end shifters in place of brifters, and sometimes the use of "moustache" and "cruiser" type handlebars.
