External rotation

External rotation

External rotation (or lateral rotation) is rotation away from the center of the body.

The muscles of external rotation include:

** Deltoid muscle
** Infraspinatus
** Teres minor

* of thigh/femur at hip [ [http://www.exrx.net/Articulations/Hip.html#anchor849446 Hip Articulations ] ]
** Gluteus maximus
** Lateral rotator group
*** piriformis
*** gemellus superior
*** obturator internus
*** gemellus inferior
*** obturator externus
*** quadratus femoris
** Sartorius
** Obturator externus

* of leg at knee [ [http://www.exrx.net/Articulations/Knee.html#anchor23261 Knee Articulations ] ]
** Biceps femoris

* of eyeball (motion is also called "extorsion") [eMedicineDictionary|Extorsion]
** Inferior rectus muscle
** Inferior oblique muscle
