Tanzania competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Tanzania competed in only one sport, sending eight runners, and was the largest single-sport team at the Athens Games.

Tanzania's only medals in Olympic history had come in athletics at the boycotted 1980 Games. Their eight-person team had members who had earned medals at the Commonwealth Games and the World Junior Championships, and also included Zebedayo Bayo, who had won both the Los Angeles and Tokyo Marathons. Unfortunately, in eleven races, only five finishes were recorded by the team, with three DNFs and one disqualification, and none managed to qualify out of their heats.

Nada pulled out just before the halfway point, having dropped to 91st, while Bayo left the race between 30 and 35 km, while still in the top 30.

Mrashani quit the race between the 10 and 15 km checkpoints.
