In October 2003 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts opened their first store location in the United Kingdom. The store situated in the world famous Harrods department store in London has since become one of 35 stores in the UK, with the latest opening scheduled for Leeds in February 2009. 3 Stores have been opened in Manchester and are currently the furthest away from the Greater London area until the Leeds location is opened. Other stores outside Greater London include Birmingham (Inside Selfridges), Oxford, Portsmouth (2 locations), Southampton, Milton Keynes, Gatwick Airport, Stansted Airport and Luton Airport. Krispy Kreme's 2003 UK arrival coincides with the 2002 departure of its major competitor Dunkin' Donuts from the UK, Dunkin' Donuts met with much less success than Krispy Kremes and only operated 7 stores, 4 in London, 2 in Dublin and 1 in Glasgow which were all closed down due to low sales.
