Julia Sanderson

Julia Sanderson (b. August 20, 1888 in Springfield, Massachusetts – d. January 27, 1975 in Springfield, Massachusetts) was a singer and Broadway actress. Her father, Albert Sanderson, was also an acclaimed Broadway star.

For her contribution on the radio, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Ms. Sanderson appeared in the Forepaugh Circus based in Philadelphia as a young child and in her early teen years along with her father. She then moved on to Broadway where she appeared in Jerome Kern musicals. She was a hit in England, and returned to the US. She was married three times. Her second marriage was to Ted Sloane the jockey. Her third marriage was to the ukelele singer Frank Crumit. With Crumit, she had a hit radio show called the War of the Sexes. The show ended when Crumit suddenly died of a heart attack. After his death, she retired from the stage, and returned to live fulltime in Springfield Massachusetts at an estate called Dunrovin. She was active in the garden club in Springfield. She passed away, living in a trailer park in Springfield. Ms. Sanderson had no children.

Ms. Sanderson has a theater named after her in Springfield.

She was a ground breaking woman, having been the first person to lend her likeness to advertising products, such as postcards, and in magazine adds. She introduced the Tango to the US. She had a "doll like" appearance, and was unique in her look, movements and singing voice. She appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair. She was an American original.
