Nalhati (Bengali: নলহাটি) is a town, municipality in Birbhum District in the Indian state of West Bengal near the West Bengal / Jharkhand border. This town is named after the Shakti peetha Nalhateshwari temple which according to the mythologies is the situated where the "nala" ie throat of goddess shakti had fallen. This is one of the 51 Shakti peethas in india.

Nahlati is a junction railway station where the Ajimgunj line joins the old HowrahSahebganj loop of eastern railway.

Nalhati police station under Rampurhat subdivision of Birbhum district looks after two administrative blocks Nalhati I and Nalhati II.

Nalhati municipality was established in 2000.[1]

Geography

Nalhati is located at 24°18′N 87°49′E / 24.3°N 87.82°E / 24.3; 87.82.[2] It has an average elevation of 48 metres (160 feet). It is on the Chhotonagpur platue. A smal portion of hill with very low altitude can be visible within the town. On the hill the Nalateswari temple and Ana Baba mazar sherif are two tourist interests over there. The soil of this part of Birbhum resembles that of Bankura and Purulia as "Lalmatir Desh" (land of red soil ).

It is on Panagarh–Morgram Highway.

Places of Interests

Nalhati is a tourist spot in West Bengal and is being promoted lately by the state government. It is healthy place to live for its pollution free environment. The Nalateswari Temple and Mazar sherif atop the small hill is a must see of this town. Many interesting sights on the hill are no longer visible for growing urbunization. The Baidhara Shalbon at the Brahmani river delta and Chandramani hills near Bautia are nice place to go for a 15 kms distance. There is good connectivity to Jharkhand, Bihar, North Bengal and south Bengal.

Being on the Chhotonagpur platue, Nalhati is the source for good quality stone chips to South Bengal as there is Crasher belt near the town.
