University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine
- University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney is a graduate medical school in Australia. It is one of the oldest medical schools in the country and is actively engaged in both teaching and research activities.
Graduate Medical Program
The Faculty's Graduate Medical Program (GMP) is a graduate-entry degree leading to the award of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Entry into the program is on the basis of undergraduate degree performance (in any discipline), GAMSAT performance, and a structured interview. Each year's cohort has approximately 274 students enrolled, of which 45 are available to international students. [http://www.medfac.usyd.edu.au/futurestudent/applicant/internat/faq.php]
The program is of four years duration, and key course features include a hybrid problem-based learning model, early clinical exposure, online learning resources, and a focus of evidence-based medicine. The curriculum has been bought and adapted by a number of other universities.
Undergraduate entry
The Faculty offers an 'undergraduate entry' medical program, in which a place is held and guaranteed in the graduate program for students after they complete a three year bachelor's degree in Science, Music or Arts at the University. Securing such a place is highly competitive, as only ten to twenty such places are offered. As of 2007, the UAI cut-off has consistently been 99.95, the highest cut-off of any undergraduate-entry program offered in Australia.
Other coursework programs
The Faculty offers a number of post-graduate coursework programs.
Research activity
The Faculty has a very large research base, with its disciplines and affiliated institutes actively engaged in research in both the basic sciences and all major areas of clinical medicine.
Teaching Hospitals
Clinical schools are based at the following major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty:
* Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
* Royal North Shore Hospital
* Concord Repatriation Hospital
* Westmead Hospital
* Nepean Hospital
* Dubbo Hospital
A number of smaller hospitals also act as teaching hospitals.
