Underworld (Jackie Dio) is a fictional character, a supervillain in publications from Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in the "Underworld" mini series in 2006.

Fictional character biography

Jackie Dio was a former Silvermane enforcer who was turned over to the cops by his brother Vince. He spent a decade in prison taking out his hatred for super-humans on depowered super-villains in the same prison. Once released he found the world had changed a lot in his absence, and that it was difficult to get re-established in the criminal world without powers. He also learned that his brother Vince had become the super-humanly strong Mr. Pain, the crimelord Owl's head enforcer. Against his will, Jackie was covertly given several super-power upgrades himself by the Consultant, an underworld figure who specialised in granting or upgrading powers. Using these new abilities, Jackie confronted and killed Vince, taking on the alias Underworld.

Civil War

Jackie resurfaced during the Civil War crisis. He had been employed by The Kingpin to infiltrate the rival crimelord Hammerhead's syndicate. Hammerhead first described Underworld as "the new kid on the block" but quickly corrected himself and said "an old kid who just got out of stir and re-entered a new game". Hammerhead was trying to round up other villains to work for him, and villains who disagreed, like Slyde, were killed by Underworld.

Using Underworld, Kingpin lured Hammerhead's forces into an ambush. Underworld escaped this after wounding Hammerhead in the legs, and later caught up with him when he was recovering in a hospital, shooting Hammerhead point blank in his head. ["Civil War: War Crimes"]

Powers and abilities

As a result of being exposed to a gaseous form of the Super Soldier Serum, many of Underworld's physical attributes are at the peak of human potential. Within the confines of the Marvel Universe Underworld is as strong, fast, agile, and durable as a human being can be without being considered superhuman.

The gaseous form of the serum isn't exactly the same as with Captain America because it did not require the recipient to be exposed to Vita-Rays to stabilize it. Underworld has one more superhuman attribute: an accelerated healing factor capable of rapidly regenerating damaged tissue much faster and more extensively than an ordinary human is capable of. This was given to him via an injection by the mystery man who talked Underworld into getting his various upgrades. Underworld's healing factor is sufficient to fully heal ordinary gunshot wounds within a matter of moments. It isn't known if Underworld's healing factor suppresses his aging process or renders him more resistant to diseases or toxins, although this is likely, given the efficiency of his healing factor.

Underworld wears a pair of unique, extremely durable sunglasses that enable him to see perfectly in the dark and can pinpoint the vulnerabilities of an opponent. The glasses also provide a lock onto a target so that the bullets Underworld fires turn in flight and follow the target they were locked on before they were fired, even around corners. Underworld also uses weaponry that's been specially modified to fire bullets made of adamantium, meaning they can penetrate almost any substance. Underworld constantly wears a long, black coat that has been lined with high grade Titanium steel, which helps protect much of his body from most forms of conventional physical attack.

Underworld is a formidable hand to hand combatant, particularly adapt at using street fighting techniques, and is also quite intelligent. Due in part to the sunglasses and the ammunition he uses, Underworld is also an expert marksman.
