McKinney High School (MHS) is located at 1400 Wilson Creek Parkway in McKinney, Texas, and is within the McKinney Independent School District. MHS is the oldest high school in McKinney and the current building opened in 1986, after moving from what is now Faubion Middle School.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) rated McKinney High School as Academically Acceptable following the 2010-11 school year.

Academics

McKinney High School holds classes from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Students attend seven class periods each lasting approximately fifty minutes and one thirty minute on-campus lunch period every day. McKinney High currently offers courses in Spanish, German, Latin, American Sign Language, and French to fulfill the state's world language requirement for graduation. Advanced Placement, Pre-AP, and College Preparatory courses are all offered at McKinney High School, current AP offerings include Art History, Biology, Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, Computer Science A and AB, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Environmental Science, European History, French Language, German Language, Human Geography, Latin Literature, Macroeconomics, Music Theory, Physics C – Mechanics and Electricity/Magnetism, Psychology, Statistics, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Studio Art – 2D, 3D, and Drawing, US Government and Politics, US History, and World History. Students may complete course work for English IV, US Government, and Macroeconomics at Collin College to earn dual-credit (high school and college) or one of many technology courses offered on the high school campus to earn a Tech Prep college credit from Collin College. McKinney High School offers courses called Ready, Set, Teach (I&II) which prepare students to become teachers. Additionally, MHS students may complete course work at McKinney High School and other McKinney ISD high school campuses to prepare them to pass the certification/licensing exam in order to become a cosmetologist, Certified Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Veterinary Technician, Cisco Certified Networking Associate, and Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education certified jailer.

Royal Pride Band The McKinney High School "Royal Pride" Band is the largest organization at McKinney High School. The "Royal Pride" is under the direction of Ken Ringel, Marcus Hunley, and John Willmarth..

FFA McKinney High School's chapter of the National FFA Organization (Future Farmers of America) is an organization with current Ag teachers Mr. Lacy and Mr. Lemons. The 2007 livestock judging and floriculture CDE team competed at the state level at Texas A&M University. Out of over 8 different teams competing for the state finals in CDE's and LDE's Mr. Lacy and Mr. Lemons have advanced one to state.[1]

McKinney High School Theatre McKinney High School Theatre, also known as McKinney Golden Mane Theatre, is a theatre arts program that provides high school level training and experience to students in both acting and technical theatre. Currently theatre courses include Theatre I-IV, Tech Theatre I-IV, Junior Varsity (Performance), Varsity Theatre (Performance), Varsity Technical Theatre, Theatre Directing, Theatre Dance, and Musical Theatre as a joint course with Choir and Dance. The department puts on an average of five productions per year including a varsity theatre children's show, a play, participation in the MHS all fine arts musical, UIL One Act Play Competition piece, and a musical theatre production. Other notable activities include a student film festival, and a show case of acting pieces entitled "Theatrefest" put on by the non-varsity classes. McKinney High School Theatre sponsors International Thespian Society Troupe 3604 which participates in the annual Texas Thespians Festival and International Thespian Festival. In 2007 MHS Theatre combined with McKinney North High School and McKinney Boyd High School theatre departments to put on Disney's Beauty and the Beast at the Texas Thespians Festival. The current Theatre Director is Denise Tooch and Technical Director is David McWhirter.

McKinney High School Choirs The McKinney High School Choral Music Department is a high school choir program that currently consists of a women's choir called Bel Canto (meaning "beautiful song" in Italian), an advanced women's choir called the Chamber Singers, a Men's Choir, a varsity mixed Concert Choir, a 12 member varsity mixed vocal jazz ensemble called Harmony, and a musical theatre class as a joint course with Theatre and Dance. MHS Choirs participate in the All-Region Choir auditions, solo and ensemble contest, and the UIL Singing and Sight Reading Contest. Notable annual performances include a fall concert, the Madrigal Dinner: Feast of Carols (a holiday dinner theatre/concert set in England, 1375), participation in the MHS all fine arts musical, the Masterworks concert (a presentation of a major choral work performed by the MHS Concert Choir, the top varsity choirs of McKinney North High School and McKinney Boyd High School, and the McKinney ISD Orchestra) and a spring concert called the "Porch Concert" that is performed on the front porch of the school. Choirs are currently under the direction of head director Cindy Johnston.

Extracurricular Activities

Strategy Club The McKinney High School Strategy Club is a club for those who enjoy strategy games, such as Risk, Twilight Imperium, and StarCraft.

Sci-Fi Club The McKinney Sci-Fi Club is a club dedicated to studying the Science Fiction genre, from early content like the movie Forbidden Planet and the TV show The Outer Limits to newer fare such as the Star Trek parody Galaxy Quest and the CG anime film Appleseed.

Bowling Club The McKinney High School Bowling Club is a part of the Texas High School Bowling Association and features Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls, and JV Boys teams. The teams have qualified to compete in regional and state level tournaments in the recent years. The team practices at Allen Bowl in Allen, TX.

Neglected Sports Cheer Club The McKinney High School Neglected Sports Cheer Club, a somewhat unique organization among most high schools, was founded in 2010 by a group of students looking to support the sports often left without fans. As a club, it tries to bring as many members and as much support as possible to sports with a low amount of fans, such as Wrestling, Cross Country, Soccer, and many more.

Paranormal Club The McKinney High School Paranormal Club was founded in 2009 by a group of students interested in exploring the unknown and unexplained. The club discusses topics and organizes activities related to subjects such as hauntings, ESP and Parapsychology, Cryptozoology, Ufology, and lost or forgotten history.

Philosophy Club The McKinney High School Philosophy Club was founded in 2008 and prides itself on its articulate study of many philosophers dating back to the early 16th century. The discussions held pertain to specific topics requiring justified textual evidence the majority of the time.

Criminal Justice Club The McKinney High School Criminal Justice club, founded in 2009, is devoted to teaching students about the different careers they may choose in the Criminal Justice field. Students are trained in various aspects that include, but are not limited to building searches, felony traffic stops, prepared opening statements, etc. This club provides in depth and hands-on information that prepares students for futures in the Criminal Justice field. A major part of the club is competing in the annual Texas Public Service Association's Criminal Justice Competition.
