Van Cortlandt Village, Bronx

Van Cortlandt Village is a subsection of the Kingsbridge Heights section of the New York City, borough of The Bronx. Named after Van Cortlandt Park, bordered by the Major Deegan Expressway to the west, the Jerome Park Reservoir to the east, W 238th Street to the south, and Van Courtlandt Park to the north, Van Cortlandt Village is home to a large elderly Jewish community (due toFact|date=November 2007 the longstanding residents of the Amalgamated Housing Cooperative and its garment-center union-related population and their descendants), with a less but still significantFact|date=November 2007 Irish community as well as a slowly growing Hispanic population.

Van Cortlandt Village has traditionally been classified as part of Kingsbridge Heights; others argue that the two neighborhoods are in a process of separating.Fact|date=November 2007 However, area residents are generally in agreementFact|date=November 2007 that both Van Cortlandt Village and Kingsbridge Heights comprise the eastern half of the larger Kingsbridge neighborhood.

Transportation

As of 2007, the BX1, BX2, BX10, and BXM3 buses run through this area. The 1 train of the New York City subway system's Broadway-Seventh Avenue line, as well as the 4 train of the Lexington Avenue line, and the D train of the Sixth Avenue line, are all nearby.
