*1701 The English Act of Settlement 1701 requires the monarch to be Protestant
*March 19 1702 King William III dies and is succeeded by his sister-in-law Queen Anne.
*August 4 1704 Gibraltar captured by the combined Dutch and British fleet under the command of Admiral George Rooke
*1704 An English and Dutch army under John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough defeats the army of Louis XIV of France at Blindheim in Bavaria, the Battle of Blenheim
*1706 The Treaty of Union is agreed, on July 22nd, between representatives of England's and Scotland's parliamemts

* 1714 Queen Anne dies and is succeeded by King George I; start of the Hanoverian dynasty
*1715 Jacobite Rising
*1716 Disarming Act attempts to secure the peace of the Scottish Highlands

*1743 War of Austrian Succession - open, but unofficial, hostilities between Britain and France
*September 13 1743 Britain signs the Treaty of Worms with Austria and Sardinia
*1744 large-scale French invasion attempt on southern England with Charles Edward Stuart stopped by storms, France declares war
*1745 Britain and allies lose the Battle of Fontenoy in Flanders
*September 21 1745 Battle of Prestonpans
*1745 Jacobite Rising
*1746 The Act of Proscription seeks to crush the Scottish clans, the kilt banned.
* 1754 - 1763 -- French and Indian War in the North American English colonies.
*1760 King George II dies and is succeeded by his grandson, King George III.
*April 16 1746 Battle of Culloden effectively ends the Jacobite Rising
*1755 Dr Samuel Johnson publishes his Dictionary of the English Language
*1773 Boston Tea Party in North America presages revolt against British rule.

*1788: First European settlement established in Australia at Sydney.
