January 4 ,1951 ) is the Canadian MP (member of parliament ), who represents the riding ofDon Valley East in theCanadian House of Commons . She is a member of the Liberal Party. Ratansi is anIsmaili , and is the firstMuslim woman elected to the Canadian House of Commons.Born in
Dar es Salaam ,Tanzania , before being elected to the House, Ratansi worked as amanagement consultant and acertified general accountant .Ratansi was the federal Liberal candidate for Don Valley East in
1988 , and came within a narrow margin of defeating Conservative incumbentAlan Redway . She served on the party's federal campaign committee in1992 and was treasurer of the party's Ontario wing from1993 to1997 .During the 39th parliament, Yasmin Ratansi was elected the chair of the standing committee on the status of Women. Furthermore, she was elected vice-chair of the standing committee on laison. Prior to this she served as the Official Opposition's Critic for National Revenue.
