Career

After posting remarkable scoring totals at NCAA Division II Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and in the USL Premier Development League, for Boulder Rapids Reserve, Cunliffe was one of the leading prospects at the MLS combine prior to the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. In the draft, Chivas USA made Cunliffe the seventh overall pick with its first selection in the first round.

Cunliffe made his MLS debut April 7 against Toronto FC and assisted on the clinching goal in a 2-0 win. He scored his first MLS goal against the Kansas City Wizards on July 29, 2007.

On March 28, 2008, he was dealt to the Earthquakes for Chris Pozniak.

John scored his 1st goal for the Earthquake on May 31, 2008 in a 3-1 to loss to Real Salt Lake. He scored with a rocket shot from within the penalty area. He nearly scored a 2nd goal later in the match when his shot went slightly wide of the goal.
