California's 27th State Senate District is one of 40 Senate Districts. It is currently represented by Democrat Alan Lowenthal of Long Beach.

District Profile

The 27th District covers a large portion of the Gateway Cities area of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. Also known as the Greater Long Beach area, the seat takes in the southeast corner of Los Angeles County. The district is comprised mostly of middle class neighborhoods, and was one of the areas worst affected by the collapse of defense and aerospace in the early 1990s.

The 27th runs north-south from the Port of Long Beach to Interstate 5. Almost half of the district's population lives in the city of Long Beach. All of Long Beach's whiter neighborhoods are in the district, including the gentrified Downtown and Belmont Shores. Other cities in the district include Lakewood, Signal Hill, Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Florence-Graham, Hawaiian Gardens, Lynwood, Paramount, and Willowbrook (about 31% of residents). The district also includes Avalon on Santa Catalina Island.
