History

Founded in 1867 at the Illinois Industrial University (now the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), the School of Architecture was established under the Polytechnic Department under the proposal by Regent John Milton Gregory. Founded two years after the Architecture Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it is the second oldest architecture school in the United States. Nathan Clifford Ricker was the first student in the school and later became the first graduate with an architecture degree granted by an American institution.

The school is also known to be the first to award an architecture degree to a female in the United States. Mary L. Page, graduated in 1878, was the first woman to earn that honour.
