Alexei Evert was a Russian Imperial General in World War I, notable for his role as commander of the Russian Western Army Group in the Brusilov Offensive. Evert joined the army in 1876 after graduation from Alexander Military School. In 1882 he graduated from General Staff Academy and served in the staffs of 3rd infantry division (1882-1886), Warsaw military district (1888-1893), 11th, 4th and 5th army corps. During the Russo-Japanese war he served as a Chief of Staff of the 1st Manchurian army. From 1908 he was a commander of the 13th army corps, and from 1912 - of the Irkutsk military district.

World War I

At the start of the war Evert was handed command of the Russian Fourth Army based in Galicia in September 1914, replacing General Salza. In august 1915 he was promoted to command Western Army Group. He participated in the unsuccessful Lake Naroch Offensive and the Brusilov Offensive where he commenced a weak and poorly prepared offensive against the Germans to assist Aleksei Brusilov.
