The A580 is a primary A road in England that connects Manchester and Liverpool or the Liverpool-East Lancashire Road (abbreviated to and known commonly as East Lancs Road) was designed and built to provide better access to the Port of Liverpool for East Lancashire and Manchester. It was the UK's first purpose-built intercity highway and was officially opened by King George V on 18 July 1934.

The road runs from Walton in Liverpool to join the A6 at Irlams o' th' Height in Salford, and was designed to eventually have three parallel roads, one for through traffic and two for local access, cite web |url=http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/environment/historichighways/eastlancs/index.asp |title=Early Highways Liverpool-East Lancashire Road A580 |work=Historic Highways |publisher=Lancashire County Council |accessdate=2008-01-19] although in the event it was upgraded later to dual-carriageway: the section within the Liverpool boundary had always been thus. The upgrading resulted in separation of the two carriageways: the first occasion this had been done in Britain.Dubious|First dual carriageway?|date=April 2008 It achieved its name since it was originally intended to reach East Lancashire, although this was never carried out: that intended portion has now been superseded by the M62 motorway.
