John Attlee, 3rd Earl Attlee

John Attlee, 3rd Earl Attlee

John Richard Attlee, 3rd Earl Attlee (born 1956) is a peer in the United Kingdom House of Lords and the grandson of Clement Attlee, the British Labour Prime Minister, who was 1st Earl Attlee.

John Attlee was educated at Stowe School, trained with Smiths Industries and worked mainly in materials management. In 1985 he went into business in the field of commercial vehicle recovery and repair.

He inherited his title following his father's death in 1991 and entered the House of Lords in 1992, initially as a crossbencher (non-party). He undertook a tour with the non-governmental organisation British Direct Aid in Bosnia during the winter of 1993-94, then ran British Direct Aid’s operation in Rwanda for most of 1995. Shortly before the general election of 1997 he joined the Conservative Party. He survived the first stage of Lords reform by becoming an elected hereditary peer under the House of Lords Act 1999. He is currently an Opposition spokesperson on transport issues and a member of the Lords Opposition Whips' Office. He is also President of the Heavy Transport Association, Patron of the Road Rescue Recovery Association and a trustee of the Attlee Foundation.
