Bhatar ( _bn. ভাতার) is a town, police station and community development block in the Sadar subdivision of Bardhaman District, West Bengal, India.

Geography

Bhatar is located at coord|23.42|N|87.90|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/28/Bhatar.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Bhatar] ] . It has an average elevation of 37 metres (121 feet). It is located in the laterite plains between Damodar River and Ajay River. ISBN 81-85459-36-3 ] Khari or Khargeswari River flows through the area, providing scope for supply of sand from places such as Karjona. It is believed that the river was earlier linked with Damodar. History

There are Sati temples at Mondalpara and Maidal burning ghat in Bonpas village, and in Mohanpur village bearing witness to the now-defunct practice of sati in the area. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, p529 ] In the 18th century the area faced massive attacks of the Maratha (Bargi) warriors. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, pp292-293 ] This being a canal-irrigated area had faced agitations, in the 1930s, against the imposition of taxes for canal water. [ Chattopadhyay, Akkori, p472 ]

Demographics

Bhatar community development block spread over 414.4 km² had a total population of 2,36,478 in 2001. Out of this 1,20,943 were males and 1,15,535 were females. Politics

Syed Md. Masih of CPI (M) won the Bhatar assembly seat in 2006 defeating his nearest rival Banamali Hajra of AITC. In 2001 and 1996, Subhas Mondal of CPI (M) defeated Banamali Hajra of AITC and Susanta Ghosh of INC, in respective years. In 1991, Mahboob Zahedi of CPI (M) defeated Bholanath Sen of INC. In 1987 and 1982, Syed Md. Masih of CPI (M) defeated Banamali Hajra and Bholanath Sen, both of INC, in the respective years. In 1977, Bholanath Sen defeated Saktipada Chattopdahyay of FBL.
