Mentor Township, Lake County, Ohio

Mentor Township is a paper township (a former civil township) in Lake County, Ohio, United States.

The township was officially formed in 1815 with 460 inhabitants. The township was at first part of Trumbull County and consisted of an area that is now the city of Mentor and portions of the city of Mentor-on-the-Lake and the village of Kirtland Hills[1]. In 1818, the southern portion of the township was split off to form Kirtland Township[1] (now the city of Kirtland and portions of the city of Willoughby and the villages of Kirtland Hills and Waite Hill).

In 1840, Lake County was created, the smallest in the state, and Mentor Township was made a part of the new county.[1]

In 1855, the people of Mentor Centre incorporated about 3,000 acres (12 km2) in the middle of the township as the village of Mentor.[1]

In 1865, there were 1250 people residing in the township and 416 in Mentor Village.[1]

In 1924, thirty-three voters petitioned to create their own village government, which incorporated as the village of Mentor-on-the-Lake on October 22, 1924.[2]

In 1926, the village of Kirtland Hills incorporated.[3]

In 1955, an attempt by the village of Mentor to annex the remaining portion of the township failed.[1]

In 1962, voters approved annexation of Mentor Township to Mentor Village and in the following year reincorporated as the city of Mentor.[1]

In 1971, Mentor-on-the-Lake incorporated as a city.
