binomial_authority = Stolley, 1936"Odontorhynchus" (meaning "
tooth snout ") is anextinct genus ofpterosaur from theTithonian -ageUpper Jurassic Solnhofen limestone ofSolnhofen ,Bavaria ,Germany . It is based on a skull with lower jaw that is now lost. This set of jaws was apparently like that of "Rhamphorhynchus", with a similar set of elongate, forward-pointing teeth at theanterior end of the jaws, although it differed in having two teeth united at the tip of the lower jaw, and none at the tip of the upper jaw. The skull was 6.5-7.0 cm (2.56-2.76 in), making it a small form.Stolley, E. (1936). "Odontorhynchus aculeatus" novo. gen. novo. sp., Ein neuer Rhamphorhynchide von Solnhofen. "Neues Jahrbuch für Mineralogie, Geololgie, und Paläontologie" Beilage-Band 75:543-564.]Not only is this an obscure genus based on a missing specimen, but its name is preoccupied (Pelzeln, 1868) (and also in use for a type of
flatworm ), and it may be dubious:for example, David Unwin did not include it in his list of valid pterosaur genera in "The Pterosaurs: From Deep Time." Unwin, D.M. (2006). "The Pterosaurs: From Deep Time". Pi Press:New York, 271-273. ISBN 0-13-146308-X.]References
