The Official Richmond Cheer Squad is organised group of people who follow the Richmond Football Club. Every week the Cheer Squad is located behind the goals at each football ground, waving flags, patties, floggers and banners in support of the Tigers. The Cheer Squad is also known as the Tiger Army.

History

The Richmond Cheer Squad was formed in 1959 by approximately twelve people who would cheer the players on at Punt Road Oval. At the conclusion of each quarter, they would travel down to the other end to cheer the full forward.

The Richmond Cheer Squad did not become official until 1964 when a committee was formed, a chairman was appointed and a constitution was created. The Cheer Squad was now known as the 'Official Richmond Cheer Squad' with the help of the Richmond Football Club. A small section of seating was allocated at the Punt Road End of the M.C.G for the Cheer Squad, other grounds around the Country soon had recognised seating for members.

Role

The Role of the Richmond Cheer Squad is to support the team at every Richmond game possible, including Home and Away matches and Pre-season matches. The Cheer Squad makes the players run through for every week's game as the players take the field. The Members are to wear Yellow and Black clothing and to participate in an array of clapping and chanting. Flags, banners and patties are also used. Noticeable banners, 'COP THAT!' and 'TIGER TUFF', are always regulars to be seen.

Richmond Tigers Grog Squad

The Richmond Grog Squad are similar to the Cheer Squad, but are permitted to drink as they are in the standing area behind the Cheer Squad. The Grog Squad are at every game in Melbourne and Geelong, starting the 'Tiger Army' chant which goes all Three Quarter time. This unites the whole area behind the goals to create a frenzy of Cheering and Clapping to give the players an extra boost for the last quarter. Collingwood Cheer Squad Leader 'Joffa' has even stated after being asked who has the most feral supporters, that the Grog Squad intimidates him and is fearful to walk past.

Punt Road End

The Punt Road End since 1969 has been adopted as the Tiger Armys unofficial seating area. Taking up Half the Great Southern Stand and a small portion of the Olympic Stand, the end is believed to be Richmonds end, the Grog Squad and Cheer Squad choose this as they're seating area because of its close proximity to Richmonds Punt Road Oval and Station. The Punt Road End is a spiritual area for any Richmond Supporter and continues to be recognised as the Tiger Armys End.

The Cage

After every win that the Richmond Football Club has the Grog Squad will start a number of chants in an area known as "the Cage" in the MCG's Southern Stand. Hundreds of Richmond supporters will stand and chant along with the Tiger Armys chants. The Cage gets its name from the appearance of the area, mainly consisting of metal bars and stairs it looks much like a Den or Cage.

Membership

The Official Richmond Cheer Squad has always had a large membership base, the biggest of all 16 clubs. The membership used to be around the 1,800 mark but now days is usually around the 700-800 mark because of new rules. The only way to be an official member, is to be a member of the Richmond Football Club.
