Australian Book Review

"Australian Book Review" is Australia's leading magazine of literary review and comment. A monthly publication, it contains reviews of books, magazines, journals and exhibitions, diaries and travel writing. It also publishes essays, commentary and new poetry.

"ABR" is noted for the quality of its writing, and is widely regarded as offering the fullest coverage of Australian books and literary culture. Its contributors write on a wide array of subjects: fiction, poetry, biography and memoir, criticism, history, media studies, current affairs, philosophy, religion, politics, economics, cultural studies, education, reference, the arts, travel and children's literature.

History

"Australian Book Review" was founded as a monthly publication in 1961. After 1974 it ceased publication, but was later revived in 1978, and has been printed continuously since then. Peter Rose is the current editor of "ABR", and the magazine's board is chaired by Morag Fraser. Previous editors have included John McLaren, Kerryn Goldsworthy, Louise Adler, Rosemary Sorensen and Helen Daniel. "ABR" is now currently based in Melbourne, Victoria.

The Calibre Prize

"Australian Book Review" has been a major player in the renascence of the Australian essay in the last decade; fostering and rewarding new insights into Australian literature, culture and society. The magazine's annual Calibre Prize, sponsored by Copyright Agency Limited, offers AU$10,000 for a new and outstanding non-fiction essay, making it one of the world's major essay competitions.

The Calibre Prize for an Outstanding Essay is designed as an inclusive competition. "ABR" welcomes essays from leading writers and commentators, but also from previously unpublished writers. All non-fiction subjects are eligible: from life writing and literary studies, to history and politics and environmental studies, to anthropology and popular science. Essayists must reside in Australia or be Australian citizens living overseas.

The ABR Poetry Prize

Beginning in 2005, the ABR Poetry Prize has become one of the most prestigious poetry competitions in Australia. Offering combined prizes of AU$5000 and a first prize of AU$4000, the ABR Poetry Prize invites entries from both established and emerging poets. The previous winners were Stephen Edgar, Judith Bishop, Alex Skovron and Ross Clark.

The ABR Reviewing Competition

"Australian Book Review" offers an annual ABR Reviewing Competition. Both celebrated and emerging writers are encouraged to submit a review of any recently published book for the chance to win AU$1000 in cash, publication in "ABR", and at least two future commissions. All categories of books are eligible, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children's and young adult books.
