Stony Point High School is a high school in the Round Rock Independent School District in Round Rock, Texas. It is the newest of the four high schools in RRISD. The principal is Albert Hernandez, who previously worked as the principal of the Stony Point Ninth Grade Center. The Ninth Grade Center is adjacent to the high school and was formerly home to Hopewell Middle School. However, due to overcrowding, a concern that is continuously prevalent in the RRISD school district, the middle school was changed into a freshman-only campus and a new middle school was built to replace the old one.

The school houses both the Science & Medicine and the Information Technology Academies, and will begin offering International Baccalaureate courses for the class of 2010.

Stony Point's feeder schools are Ridgeview, C.D. Fulkes, and Hopewell middle schools.

Campus Highlights

Stony Point High School, being the youngest of the high schools in Round Rock, has a very modern architectural layout. The campus consists of multiple wings designated by letters (e.g. A Wing, B Wing, etcetera). The academic wings (A, B, and C) are each two stories high, with multiple stairways connecting the floors. Overcrowding prompted construction of the C wing onto the A wing soon after the school was opened.

On the second floor two skyways connect the academic wings with the "mall" area, cafeteria, and the various other non-academic classrooms (further subdivided into lettered wings). Stony Point High School features a full welding shop, with various forms of welding equipment. Additionally, the shop houses a full tool selection for the students in the agricultural manufacturing course. Furthermore, Stony Point High School offers multiple engineering and architecture courses with full access to the Autodesk catalogue of engineering software.

Academic and Fine Arts Recognition

May 2007, Stony Point High School made the Newsweek list of top high schools with a placement of 1,068. The rankings are based on the total number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and/or Cambridge tests that were given at a school last May divided by the number of seniors graduating. All public schools listed achieved a ratio of at least 1.0000, meaning they had given at least as many tests in 2006 as they had graduates.

cheduling

Stony Point High School, like many other schools both in the RRISD and across the nation, uses a block form of scheduling. Every student is offered, in normal circumstances, 8 periods. These 8 periods are spread across 2 days (titled A and B days), with 4 periods each day, alternating on a day to day basis. Each period is an hour and half long, with a short passing period in between classes to allow a student to visit his or her locker as well as make their way across the campus.

Due to the high student enrollment, students are divided into thirds for lunches. Based on their corresponding 3rd period (on A days) or 7th period (on B days) they will attend a different lunch, also grouped by letters (e.g. A lunch, B Lunch etcetera). During these lunches, only those students who are seniors are allowed to leave campus with their own transportation.

Media Controversy

Stony Point High School is often a target for the local media as a scapegoat school. Due to the repeated circulation of stories, its reputation has been severely tarnished. Similar events in other RRISD High Schools go unreported.

After a media-proclaimed riot on August 24th, 2006, Stony Point once again entered the spotlight. Security after this event was enhanced to a point of total "lock-down" at the campus. The aftermath following the fight, primarily the police handling of the event, lead to an investigation by the NAACP.

2007 Dell-Winston School Solar Car Challenge

In the summer of 2007 a group of 4 Stony Point High School students lead by student Robert Wilson competed in the Dell-Winston School Solar Car Challenge, a nationally covered solar car challenge. They named their team Solaris and designed and constructed a solar car, dubbed "Diablo Del Sol", with grants and donations from the corporations Lowe's, 3M, and Applied Materials. After the 9 day race from Round Rock, Texas to Newburgh (city), New York, they placed 3rd in the Classic Division, with 451.1 miles completed at an average speed of 17.07 miles per hour.

NJROTC Program

Stony Point's award winning NJROTC program competes each year in a variety of events and competitions, the results of which have contributed greatly to its success and reputation. In addition, it sponsors an annual Chili Cook-Off that students are free to compete in and enjoy. In 2008, the construction of an extensive obstacle course designed by one of the school's cadets was completed and ready for use.

ports

Stony Point has many athletic teams including a club Lacrosse Team. Stony Point has not historically had a good football team, but in 2007 the Tigers went 9-3 and won the 14-5A District and are projected to win it again in 2008.
