Water Works, Belfast

Water Works is an electoral ward of North Belfast.

The ward was created as part of the local government boundary review in the early 1980s and is named after the Belfast WaterWorks. Taking the area known as the Bone from the former Crumlin ward, the lower Cliftonville from the former Cliftonville ward, Newington from the former Duncairn ward and areas around the upper Limestone Road and lower Cavehill Roads formerly in the Grove ward. In 1993 the ward expanded to take in the areas between Cliftonpark Avenue and the Antrim Road which had formerly been in the New Lodge ward.

In the most recent censuses in 1991 and 2001 the ward has been over 85% catholic.

Under current proposals for the reform of local government in Northern Ireland the ward is due to lose the Newington area to the Duncairn ward while gaining the mostly protestant Lower Oldpark Road area from Crumlin ward.
