Brigadier (United Kingdom)

Brigadier (United Kingdom)

:"Please see "Brigadier General" for other countries which use this rank"

Brigadier (Brig) is a senior rank in the British Army and Royal Marines.

A Brigadier is superior to a Colonel but subordinate to a Major-General. The rank has a NATO rank code of OF-6, equivalent to a Commodore in the Royal Navy or an Air Commodore in the Royal Air Force or the air forces of many Commonwealth countries.

In 1922 the rank of Brigadier-General was replaced by that of Colonel-Commandant, however this was short-lived and in 1928 it was replaced by the appointment of Brigadier. Brigadier is not considered to be a General Officer rank by the British Army but rather a Field Officer rank. The old rank of Brigadier General has since been reintroduced in Canada and some other Commonwealth countries.

The rank insignia for a Brigadier is a crown over one pip over two pips. The rank insignia for a Brigadier-General was crossed sword and baton.

The title of Colonel-Commandant is now used by the heads of some corps (e.g Army Air Corps and Royal Corps of Signals).
