Academics

Overview

Mount Royal instructors in all disciplines offer an effective combination of advanced academic credentials and solid experience in their fields. This helps ensure that Mount Royal students receive an education that prepares them for success.

Developing leading-edge programs with input from business and industry leaders is part of Mount Royal’s formula for success. For Fall 2008, Mount Royal will offer five new degrees: a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts - Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Communication and Bachelor of Business Administration. These join a Bachelor of Nursing which was launched in 2007. Mount Royal is renowned for breaking new ground — it was the first college in Canada to offer applied degree programs and it continues to provide innovative programming that combines academic studies with the real-world skills that the workplace demands. In 2007, Mount Royal continued its innovation by opening the Faculty of Teaching and Learning. Unique in Canada, this faculty consists of four units which focus on student learning and teaching excellence through the Department of General Education, the Department of Education and Schooling, the Academic Development Centre and the Institute for Research in Teaching and Learning. Mount Royal’s state-of-the-art Centre for Communication Studies is among the most advanced communications teaching facilities in the world. And it’s just one in a list of innovative faculties that includes the Bissett School of Business, the Mount Royal Conservatory, Arts, Health and Community Studies as well as Science and Technology.

Housing

The Mount Royal campus is a “home away from home” for more than 1,000 students who live in residence. These accommodations are perfect for students who want to live either on their own or with roommates in two- and four-bedroom apartment units or one-, two-, or four-bedroom townhouses. Both types of housing feature barrier-free access for students with disabilities. All suites are furnished with a fridge and stove. They also include telephone service with voicemail, high-speed broadband Internet and cable TV. Residence students also have access to games rooms, storage spaces, social rooms and laundry facilities and on-campus housing is close to Mount Royal’s recreation facilities and the library.

Athletics and Recreation

The Cougar collegiate athletics program produces some of the best college athletes in the country, and Mount Royal Cougar Athletics teams are the most successful in the history of the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA). Mount Royal Recreation enables students and the community to focus on healthy, active lifestyles through its facilities, services and programs. The Recreation Centre was expanded in 2002 and features five volleyball/basketball courts, a five-lane running track, fitness centre, pool, climbing and bouldering walls, multi-purpose studios and six squash courts. All credit students automatically become “recreation members” and receive member rates for all programs.

The Iniskim Centre

In 2007, Mount Royal opened this new facility created specifically to increase enrolment and retention of Aboriginal students. The centre is dedicated to fostering academic success for Aboriginal students and increasing awareness of distinct Aboriginal cultures, history and protocols. It offers a range of programs, from academic advising to aboriginal school housing to cultural and spiritual advising.

Learning Skills Centre

Consultants in this centre provide assistance with study and writing skills as well as academic skills workshops for all students. Peer tutors are available for individual help with specific courses. The centre also provides services for students with disabilities.

Campus Health and Wellness Services

The EnCana Wellness Centre offers comprehensive services and programs to support students and enable them to live well including access to chiropractors, nurses, physicians, psychologists, physiotherapists, massage therapists, athletic therapists, a human rights advisor and ombudsperon, a tobacco reduction educator, a health education coordinator and a multi-faith chaplaincy coordinator.

tudents’ Association

The Students’ Association of Mount Royal College (SAMRC) is the oldest college student government in Alberta and remains a Canadian leader. It runs students clubs, sponsors events and provides student support services. The Association participates in Mount Royal’s First Year Insight (FYI) which is invaluable to new students getting accustomed to Mount Royal, and the Cultural Mosaic Centre celebrates diversity and helps international and Canadian students to network. The Students’ Association operates the Wyckham House student centre. This newly-renovated centre will re-open in Fall, 2008 and will continue to provide students with many benefits, including advocacy, volunteer and employment opportunities, entertainment, leadership development and a comprehensive health and dental plan. Wyckham House is home to the Liberty Lounge, one of Canada’s top live music venues.
