Kungälv is a city (pop. 20,500) in Bohuslän on the Swedish west coast and the seat of Kungälv Municipality, Västra Götaland County. Kungälv is roughly translated as King River and is such named because of the two big rivers that floats in the vicinity, Göta Älv and Nodre Älv. Kungälv has never housed any royalties, neither Norwegian nor Swedish.

The city was founded in 1612, when the former settlement at Kungahälla was moved to the Bohus Fortress. The fortress combined with "Bräckboden" is the most popular tourist attractions in Kungälv.

Boston Bruins forward and Olympian P. J. Axelsson was born and raised in Kungälv.
